This sentence was initially added as a translation of sentence #375305
added by ghasemkiani, March 9, 2011
او خانوادهی بزرگی دارد.
Why isn't it:
او خانوادهی بزرگ دارد.
This noun is in the indefinite form: "a big family". In Persian, the indefinite form of nouns (or noun phrases) (called نکره in Persian as opposed to معرفه [definite]) is formed using "یک" or "ی" (equivalent to the indefinite article "a" in English).
Thank you very much, Ghasem. I thought this was the reason, but I wasn't sure.
If I understood you correctly, we could also have the following sentence with the same meaning:
او یک خانوادهی بزرگ دارد.
Yes, you are right. But the former version seems to be more fluent.
Thanks, I'll try to use your version then.
