@Tepan I posted my first Toki Pona sentences, am I getting the hang of it?

Tepan Tepan December 10, 2020 December 10, 2020 at 8:13:22 AM UTC link Permalink

Hi DJ_Saidez,

on first glance, they look OK. (I can comment on them later.) So it seems like you do get a hang of it. I have a favor to ask you: please only add sentences that you're sure that they are correct and usual. Not only are these valuable contributions to the corpus per se, but they are also less likely to be confusing or even wrong because one might be tempted to go full experimental. (In other words: it should never be obvious that the author of a sentence isn't proficient.)

Having said this:
"li" after "mi" should be dropped.
"tenpo ale la" can't be used mid-sentence, but only at the beginning.

-> tenpo ale la mi kama sona e ijo.

Ok, I'll find somewhere to practice, and then come back once I set up a bit of a foundation
Since I haven't tried communicating with anyone in Toki Pona yet I don't know what counts as natural
In the meantime I'll release what I've written so far, feel free to adopt them :)
I'm adding them to this list so I can keep track of them https://tatoeba.org/eng/sentenc...ts/show/169052

By the way, what's your Toki Pona style, if I may ask? (How did you learn it? I learnt from Pu.)

OK, see ya!

Right now, being an absolute beginner, I'm using 3 different starter resources
https://elzr.com/tokipona/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v...Z4ToT6&index=1
And Anki decks from jan Pije
I'm also looking at what other contributors have done for similar sentences to see how they represent certain ideas (such as "question", and what particles are used around it) and imitate them

So I don't know what to call my style
I was thinking of coming up with my own way of describing things once I got a firm grasp of grammar but realized that's too extravagant

Anyways I'll see if I can join a group of Toki Pona speakers and practice building sentences

I distinguish mainly between "official Toki Pona", i.e. Toki Pona as it was published in Sonja's book in 2014 ("The Language of Good", a.k.a. "Pu") and intermediate drafts from between 2001 and 2014, documented by Pije, Kipo and in the "Classic Word List". (I use "Pije", "Kipo" and "Classic Word List" as labels here).

The manual in Spanish is an intermediate draft(2004), the Anki decks are from, well, Pije, and the videos are based on Pu
I plan on sticking to whatever is canon, so Pu (which I don't have) and the starter videos
Any idea where I should go from there after the videos, besides your website?

Pije is "pre-Pu" ("traditional Toki Pona" was his wording back when his course was online, which matches well with the "classic word list" I mentioned earlier).

The video is not based on Pu. (Or "it's not pu" as many say.) Right at the beginning it has "mi jan Misali li pana sona pi toki pona tawa sina". In Pu, it would have been "mi jan Misali. mi pana sona ... Speaking of which, "mi pana sona" instead of "mi pana e sona" is also not Pu's style...
