I think this is a closer translation. 遭難 doesn't usually mean losing one's way.

I think 遭難 can mean get lost, in the disastrous sense, like hikers or skiers getting lost on a mountain and then starving or having other health problems.

I like your other translation. It's likely what first would pop into mind.
