Hi! I'm Shari and I'm a native English speaker from the midwestern United States. I adore studying and speaking languages. I have an undergraduate degree in French, a master's degree in library and information science, and I'm working on adding a Spanish language minor to my teaching credentials. I hope to work with Spanish-speakers in the future. I am a life-long learner with deep respect for people of all cultures and languages and I use language as an instrument of peace.

Then learn esperanto ! There is no better token of linguistic respect than to adopt a neutral language to address foreigners. Peace is respect, first and foremost.

Bienvenue parmi les amoureux des langues, shaw !

Can someone please explain the "needs native check" function? I wouldn't mind doing this, but could not figure out which sentence needed to be looked at. Also, why are some sentences grayed out at the bottom?

You can't ascertain that a sentence is correct, or that it is in common use unless you are native, or you communicate every day with native speakers.
Sentences tagged as "@needs native check" were probably written by a non-native speaker, it uses unussual grammar, or it might just have some mistake. All sentences tagged are easily accessible in here
http://tatoeba.org/deu/tags/sho...s_native_check
and any native user can comment and verify that a sentence is correct, and then a moderator removes the @nnc tag and uses the tag "OK" (or any other necessary tag). Otherwise it can be tag for "@change" if it needs to undergo modification.

Gray translations are undirect translations (translation of a direct translation). Advanced users can link two translations together, deciding whether they match or they don't. Undirect translations aren't necessarily matches.

The languages adding process is now finished (for this time, of course now that I've documented for myself the process of adding languages, it would be not that long anymore to add new ones)

I will try ASAP to reupdate the interface files to be able to translate them on Launchpad (as they were spoiled by Bora if you remember),

On the same time I will start to take care of all the unanswered emails/private messages I have (about user promotion etc.)

"Novian", ça avait l'air d'être un bon nom pour un énième ersatz d'espéranto à 2000 phrases max...

sysko sysko April 10, 2012 April 10, 2012 at 8:52:13 PM UTC link Permalink

It means that now you can look at random sentences in these new languages and search for them in the search engine (I've solved the problem also for the Novian language)

I think a basic a priori requirement to add a language is having an active native (or proficient) speaker.
Is there any in Tatoeba?

Cainntear Cainntear April 11, 2012 April 11, 2012 at 12:27:14 PM UTC link Permalink

I think what Marcelostockle means to say is that it would be helpful to update your profile to say which languages you speak, both as a learner and natively.

Welcome to Tatoeba, anyway, and I hope you find it useful.

Just a little poll out of curiosity:
Where do you take the sentences you add, besides those you translate from others?
Do you invent them all on the spot or do you prefer taking them from literacy, websites or whatnot, and if so, what makes you choose of a sentence over another one?

I think the best is making them in the spur of the moment, out of daily situations, rather than from literary scenarios.
