non, sacredceltic already noticed it earlier on the wall. He assumed that it probably was boracasli or some other troll. It's because the tatoeba launchpad is open to all, so you could easily correct it there (if noone already did) but you have to wait for an update to see the effect (it's not live).

For all of the "powerusers" in Tatoeba, another Usescript-"Schmankerl" ;)

It places clones of the log entries and the tags chronologically between the comments. Click on the "Comments"-header to toggle the display of the logs and tags.

PS: I had again problems installing it in Chrome (don't exactly know why, it's the @require again), so please try several times before you complain, please.

Wenn ein Satz mit dem Tag "OK" versehen ist, dann heißt dies, dass ein anderer Nutzer diesen Satz als korrekt erachtet. Das ist zum Beispiel besonders nützlich, wenn der Autor des Satzes kein Muttersprachler ist. Shishir hat sich zum Beispiel freundlicherweise bereiterklärt, meine spanischen Sätze zu sichten.

Hier ein Beispielsatz mit OK-Tag:
http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/1309607

So, please accept my apologies, let me start again:

Hi, I'm involved in Glosbe project. We've recently imported Tatoeba data. Glosbe target is to build multilingual dictionary, something like wiktionary or omegawiki. Our target is to provide easy way to create/edit bilingual dictionaries translating even between most unique languages (there are more than 2000 languages right now on Glosbe, yet most of them represented poorly).
As it's nice to see how do words behave in sentences we're using parallel corporas available on liberal licenses on the net. Some of them is poor quality (like KDE manuals), some translations are very creative (like movie subtitles). Yet we still find them useful, at least for language pairs we can test, even if 20% of displayed sentences is not good. We've added tatoeba data, as it's very high quality and contains great amount of languages. I hope you don't mind. Each data displayed in glosbe comes with source indicator and (in most cases) with link. I hope, that presenting tatoeba links would make tatoeba more recognizable and would spread tatoeba idea.
Glosbe is very beta project. It's very young and currenlty under heavy development. In the begining of the New Year we're planning to add 'colaborative' feature to glosbe - users would be able to login with facebook/google/email and add/edit/remove translations. It should be easier than in wiktionary and more effective - adding one translation pair would create many translation pairs.
We're open to all ideas, we love to hear feedback, we want to make glosbe good and useful. If you'd like to help us: please contact us, using contact link on http://glosbe.com .

Best regards, and Merry Xmas

sacredceltic sacredceltic December 23, 2011 December 23, 2011 at 9:25:13 AM UTC link Permalink

Hi urszula,

I do not represent Tatoeba of which I'm a mere contributor. My remark was my personal judgement. When I borrow from somebody (especially since what I borrow is preciously hand-made and, as you say, "very high quality"), I say "please" and "thank you", regardless of the license. You just did now. Fine.

Now I understand that you took it bad that I criticised the quality of your data.
I must say I've been observing your service for a while and I must say you have improved. I think your project is a good idea (and it has a nice mascot!)
However, when Tatoeba is Arts and Crafts, Glosbe is mass industrial production.
You inject masses of raw documents and focus on that quantity rather than on its analysis.

To illustrate my point, I looked up for the French word « guère », which I cherish and means [eng]"little"/"scarcely" and for which I created a number of entries in Tatoeba.

If I look up on Glosbe for the English definition and exemples of sentences and translations, I find this: http://glosbe.com/fr/en/gu%C3%A8re?page=0

There are a number of problems here:

1) most of the example sentences that are retrieved deal with « guérir »(=[eng] "to cure") or « guéri(e) » and have nothing to do with « guère », because you probably use raw SPHINX results...

2) some exemple sentences that you retrieve, particularly from Opensubtitles are rough, for the reason I mentioned in this discussion here http://tatoeba.org/fre/wall/sho...5#message_8675
and Glosbe offers a good illustration to my argument, for exemple :

[fra] "Le plus important c' est que tu guérisses" => [eng] "First you must get well, those terrible pains must disappear"

It's obvious that this English subtitle has little to do with the French...

3) I can't find all exemple sentences with « guère » from Tatoeba, and the examples you provide do not link directly to the sentence in Tatoeba but rather to the home page (a pity in my view, since you could also import our direct sentences' urls...)
And Tatoeba is not part of the list of your sources here http://glosbe.com/partners

4) Following with this same example, the definitions you provide are taken exclusively from Wiktionary and are unreliable (the main meaning of « guère »= [eng]"little" is not there)...and to top it, the Google translation of the word is plain wrong...
I am personnally very hostile to Wiktionary, which is full of mistakes and has no authority whatsoever and is completely irrelevant for French, in particular. I think you could find other available sources for definitions in each language.

To summarize, as you can see from this example (and I could take thousands of others with the same result), if I'm a native speaker of English and learner of French, your page on « guère » is not only inaccurate, it is plain misleading...

Again, I praise your idea and your efforts, and I must say that you have improved, particularly in your layout, but I consider Glosbe, as such, as an industrial tool that is usable only by experts who know its failings in order to be able to use it...
I recommend that you should better process the words and fsomehow filter your sources to retain only the relevant translations of good quality.

The present failings of Glosbe are the same failings that translations engines currently have : lack of language analysis.

Quality is better than quantity.

Finally, your objectives and principles are not clearly explained on your site. Do you have a non-commercial purpose? Who are you and how are you financed?

I hope we can collaborate in the future to provide better free service and language tools to the public.

Merry Christmas

Hi,
I'll try to make it short. Our main target is to provide dictionaries and this data is supposed to be as reliable as possible. It should be made editable in the beginning on 2012, so if there would be any mistakes or lack of some translations everyone is invited to improve our service. In this part of service quality is most important. However in Translation Memories, how we call pairs of translated sentences, quantity is the king. Sometimes you not really look for word, but rather for some inspiration, thats why we don't fight with not one-to-one exact translations. There are ways to improve quality of this part of system, but the price is to remove a lot of potentially useful translations, so we haven't decided to do it yet. As I said before: I think that having even 20% not-good-translations in this part of the system in my opinion still makes it useful.
We're a couple of people from Poland. Site was financed completely by us till December, but as costs was growing rapidly we've decided to add ads, as you can see right now (yet it's not self financing still). If the initiative is commercial - I don't know what to answer, we try to avoid adding CC-NC data as we've ads now. However the project is non profit and is free.

Icelandic is very obviously on the rise, at least in Africa.

I've got a similar message too (yet with a much more elegant text:). Googling the name I've found on this website* a description of this scam and a letter, you would get, if you answered:

Dearest,

Thanks for your mail and understanding, I really like to have a good relationship with you. I promise you all that makes up a defined and a refined relationship.

I decided to contact you because of the urgency of my situation here, I am Miss Mayinta Elliot Tapfumaneyi Manyika, 26 years old girl from Zimbabwe, the daughter of Late Elliot Tapfumaneyi Manyika Minister without Portfolio and the National political Commissar for ZANU-PF:

I am constrained to contact you because of the maltreatment I am receiving from my step mother; she planned to take away all my late father's treasury and properties from me since the unexpected death of my beloved Father.

Meanwhile I wanted to escape to the Europe, but she hides away my international passport and other valuable traveling documents. Luckily she did not discover where I kept my fathers file which contains important documents. So I decided to run to the Refugee Camp where I am presently seeking asylum under the United Nations High Commission for the Refugee herein Dakar Republic Of Senegal. I wish to contact you personally for a long term business relationship and investment assistance in your Country.

My Father of blessed memory deposited the sum of Six Million, Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($6,500,000.00) in Senegal with my name as the next of kin. However, I shall forward you with the necessary documents on confirmation of your acceptance to assist me for the transfer and investment of the fund. As you will help me in an investment, and I will like to complete my studies, as I was in my 1st year in the university, when the crisis started.

It is my intention to compensate you with 10% of the total money for your services and the balance shall be my investment capital. This is the reason why I decided to contact you. Please all communications should be through this email address only for confidential purposes.

As soon as I receive your positive response showing your interest I will put things into action immediately. In the light of the above, I shall appreciate an urgent message indicating your ability and willingness to handle this transaction sincerely. I am staying at the female hostel.

Awaiting your urgent and positive response. Please do keep this only to your self please I beg you not to disclose it to anybody for security purposes.

I promise you my sincerity and honest over this our relationship and will always love you forever. I expect your honest and earnest reply.

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Mayinta Elliot.
