English speakers: Currently I want to improve my writing and listening skills. So I'll help you out with Spanish if you help me out with English! I'am from Spain, so I'm a fully native Spanish speaker with Castilian accent! Send PM.

something is wrong with that list. It features sentences that ARE translated in the languages it says they're not...

You can erase favorites in the same way as you create them, click on the heart (that now is grey), and that sentence will disappear from your list of favorites.

Thank you! But I would have liked the idea to erase them all together at once (having to much of them).

What is the correct procedure to link two sentences that are completely unconnected so far?

I could just add a duplicate of one of the sentences as a translation to the other and wait for the duplicate merge script to resolve the duplication. But there must be a better way. I just cannot find it at the moment...

Merci! C'était un plaisir. Je l'ameliorais en ajoutant la fonction ce qui Zifre a deja fait mais avec contrôle visuelle.

jakov jakov November 24, 2011 November 24, 2011 at 8:29:40 PM UTC link Permalink

UPDATE!!!

The script now includes adding sentences by number! However you have to do it in a few tiny steps: 1. click on the "add by number button" (looks like a input field) to add a line where you can input the number, 2. type or copy the number to the input field, 3. hit enter or click the server symbol (if the sentence exists it will be added to the list, if not or if already in the list there will be an error symbol), 4. click the "link" button next to the sentence that you just added to the list and double checked whether it fits.

jakov jakov November 24, 2011 November 24, 2011 at 9:22:20 PM UTC link Permalink

One more UPDATE:

Now double-clicking on the "add by number button" makes the input field appear ALWAYS (and double clicking it again disables this again). Also, double-clicking on the "add sentence" symbol will delete all sentences from the "shopping cart" (but you will be asked to confirm). Enjoy!

Zifre Zifre November 14, 2011 November 14, 2011 at 10:46:01 PM UTC link Permalink

I wrote a userscript for Firefox and Chrome that adds a box under each sentence where you can input the number of another sentence to link:

http://tatoeba.org/spa/wall/show_message/5401

The script is pretty simple, so hopefully it will be added to Tatoeba itself eventually. Once sysko releases an API for Tatoeba, I can also update it so that it shows both sentences before you link them. Right now, at least it lets you see one of the sentences...

For users of other browsers, I have a bookmarklet that does more or less the same thing:

http://tatoeba.org/wall/show_message/4507

I'm fairly certain that this is an issue with Chrome. I've had similar unexplainable issues with with other userscripts in Chrome.

I was hoping they would have fixed this by now, but I guess Chrome users will have to use one of the other methods or switch to Firefox.

replace A and B with the sentence id's you want to link...and you don't need to be a corpus maintainer

Anyway, since people can do it without even having the sentences under their eyes, I think it is a very dangerous way to mess up Tatoeba...

There's also a userscript that makes it a little easier (adds an input field for the number of the sentence one wants to link the current sentence to), but thats still not perfect. I guess we should enhance the user interface for that: I would have in mind, that after one added the sentences number in the input field the script loads this sentence and only after that one can link it by pressing the normal link button. Also there could be something like a "shopping basket" where one can put only one sentence at once to have it ready when browsing to another one and then link it to the later (this way no numbers needed.

What do you think? Would this be usefull enough to be coded?

Why not make it so that users can ask for two sentences to be linked, which sends a message to the Corpus Maintainers, who can then review and decide whether to link the sentences?

cntrational, i agree. maybe by doing this we could avoid any mess

sacredceltic sacredceltic November 17, 2011 November 17, 2011 at 11:30:12 AM UTC link Permalink

Being a Corpus Maintainer is not guarantee against mistakes. I don't know of any superpower they are endowed with.
Sometimes meanings differ by one single letter and I have seen dozens of instances where sentences have been linked although they do not match.
When you link 2 sentences, you have to :
1) Have them CLEARLY laid out under your eyes at the same time.
2) Be a native in one of the languages and very good at the other.
3) Turn seven times your tongue in your mouth before doing anything.
4) check with natives any hint of a reason why the 2 sentences should NOT be linked (or unlinked)
Usually, if 2 sentences are not currently linked, there is a 99,99% chance that is because they just don't match, for any visible, or invisible reason...
In my experience, the most obvious and "easiest" matching candidates (because the sentences are so short and seem so identical) are the most erroneous...

sacredceltic sacredceltic November 14, 2011 November 14, 2011 at 11:23:43 AM UTC link Permalink

You have to be a Corpus Maintainer to do this.

Please try out my brand-new userscript for VISUAL LINKING

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/118538

It's still not perfect, but it should work (at least in Firefox, not tested with Chrome + Blank Canvas). The main flaw will be that it only works properly on /show/ pages.

jakov jakov November 19, 2011 November 19, 2011 at 8:46:13 PM UTC link Permalink

I don't know any Hebrew, but it seems strange to me, that e.g. the exclamation marks are on the left in translations, but on the right in /sentences/show/ view. That seems strange!

Ĉu vi celas kiel trovi en serĉilo? Tion mi ne scias, sed vi ja povas aliri frazon per tatoeba.org/epo/sentences/show/[metu_numeron] aŭ per enmeto de la numero en la tekstujo (input) ĉe la supre dekstra flanko de tiaj paĝoj (kie skribiĝas "Montri frazon kun n°:"). Espereble tio helpis al vi.

Looking for the first time for the possibility to find a sentence by its number, I felt a bit confused. But soon I realised: I first have to click on a single sentence, then I see the search bar (as described by Jakov) on the upper right side of the screen
Serĉante la unan fojon eblon por trovi frazon per ĝia numero, mi sentis ioman konfuzon. Sed baldaŭ mi rimarkis: mi devas unue alklaki unuopan frazon, tiam mi vidas la serĉolinion (kiel priskribis Jakov) je la supra dekstra flanklo de la ekrano.
