Are all of the sentences tagged for length (14 to 16 words, 17 to 20 words, etc.) from the Tanaka Corpus?

Zifre Zifre March 6, 2011 March 6, 2011 at 3:19:58 AM UTC link Permalink

Apparently a sentence can have a space at the beginning and end. But almost nobody will ever see it due to the nature of HTML. I suggest that this be prohibited.

BraveSentry BraveSentry March 5, 2011 March 5, 2011 at 9:29:29 AM UTC link Permalink

hey everybody,

yesterday i´ve finally found a useful new tag, which i added. i called it "most important phrases" and its sense is to sum up the phrases one will need most or first when visiting a country or learning a language, such as "What time is it?", "My name is Balthusius Wallenkamp." or "We need a doctor!".

so everyone who has the right to tag, please tag the most important phrases as such.

I've finished looking over and adopting sentences in CK's list of Tanaka Corpus sentences of 17-20 words. I don't know how many I adopted, but I rejected about 250 unadopted sentences for various reasons. You may find them in my new list, "Ignored English Sentences." Please feel free to search through it and adopt whatever you can save. After this, though, I'd like to focus more on writing sentences with words that aren't in Tatoeba yet. CK also has vocabulary lists for that purpose.

One must be a trusted user. Check out the FAQ link at the bottom of the page.

Does anybody needs these sentences? Maybe this is a merely waste of time?

Yes, these examples are very important.

I came to Tatoeba through Jim Breen japanese dictionary, as I often needed to see example usages of the phrases.

Demetrius Demetrius March 3, 2011 March 3, 2011 at 6:12:18 PM UTC link Permalink

Theoretical point of view:
Tatoeba is a language corpus. It is an essential thing for creating language-processing software, and just any software. For example, Braulio Bezerra created a programe to practice typing that uses the sentences from Tatoeba.

Pragmatic point of view:
· You can use Tatoeba as a big phrasebook.
· Since there are many native speakers around, you can try translating something into a foreign language and ask a native speaker to correct you, to improve your skills. But it’s advisable to leave a comment “Needs native check” in such case.

Demetrius Demetrius March 3, 2011 March 3, 2011 at 6:16:46 PM UTC link Permalink

Ah, forgot to mention that a main features that distinguist Tatoeba from other corpora are:
· CC-BY license (you can use the sentences in any way you like, without paying anything, and do with them what you want)
· multilingual nature

But some points are lacking:
· there is no morphology checking (since doing it for all the languages supported is a giant amount of work)
· there is no way to differentiate homonyms
· sometimes sentences are not so representative as full texts, so some statistics may be biased (however, using the long texts would raise copyright issues)

sysko sysko March 4, 2011 March 4, 2011 at 5:23:26 AM UTC link Permalink

at least I use it everyday for my Chinese/English study or when I'm facing text in Esperanto (as google translate does not support it).
After I do agree that sometimes when translating some obscure sentences one can ask to himself "will someone ever read this ?". But I think, sure the more obscure, with rare vocabulary a sentence is, the less chance it has to be found by someone, but on the other hand the more chance it has to be usefull, because it's with "obscure" vocabulary etc. that most of language learner will need something more than a dictionnary, i.e Tatoeba.

Hello, I don't like the section "how to contribute". When I click on "Contribute", "How to contribute" absurdity appears. I hope that this article will be removed. I know how to contribute.

also when you search for words which are not present in tatoeba you reach the "how to contribute" page when you clock on the link that suggests to add a sentence with that word, when it would be more logical to reach the "add sentences" page

Right, I found that annoying too. Especially on my slow connection here in China.

Fixed. It should have been redirected to "add sentences". I just forgot to change the link.

I should probably do the same for "Browse". Perhaps by adding a "Browse by id".

You don't need to click on the Contribute button. Just wait for the popup menu to appear, and click on the respective buttons concerning which way you want to contribute.
