Two linking feature requests:

1) Why not let normal users link their own sentences to each other? This should be really easy to change in the coding, right?

2) Could we consider an interlink feature for all aspiring polyglots? i.e.: You check off all the sentences in a family that you would like to link, instead of just linking two, and then they and all of their inter-combinations get linked. I say this because the number of linkings that a person who adds n translations at a time has to do is n-choose-2, which is only, say, 6, if you add four translations together, but 45 if you're super-multilingual and add, say, ten.

1) I don't think all users will understand the graph structure of Tatoeba well enough to allow this.

2) I think that, even for trusted users, this would be too easy to mess up. Each pair has to be considered individually, otherwise it is possible for people to link sentences with subtle differences. I've caught myself almost doing this before.

But I agree that it can be a burden, especially when they're not your sentences and you have to do it manually instead of with the little buttons that you see when they're your own.

Re 1) Debatable. You could also say that not all users shoud be allowed to add translations because they don't understand the graph structure of Tatoeba. IMO, linking is more benign.

Re 2) Could maybe use a constraint here. For example, sentences that were added within 30 minutes of each other may be interlinked.

Pharamp Pharamp March 1, 2011 March 1, 2011 at 10:50:54 PM UTC link Permalink

I think that the second point could be resolved or improved in this way (but I don't know anything at all about the code): the linking function, instead of refreshing the page, reloads the sentence box, as when you add a translation. It could enhance a lot the speed of the whole process for a human, also because with the new version the access to the database will be more smooth and rapid.

For the first one, Trang is preparing something very useful about this matter, and it will be soon made available. You should ask her for more details ;)

I have a suggestion regarding fonts and scripts without Unicode encoding.

See http://tatoeba.org/spa/sentences/show/395028

Most people will probably see a random jumble of characters, instead of Tengwar.

In the HTML that Tatoeba generates, the <span> that contains a sentence should have the 'lang' property set to the correct value. This is useful for other reasons too, so that the browser can correctly identify the sentence even if the rest of the page is in the language of the interface.

Then, in Tatoeba's CSS, there could be something like this:

:lang(quenya) {font-family: Tengwar;}

And a corresponding @font-face declaration that would link to Tengwar fonts in the WOFF and TTF formats.

Any other scripts that need special fonts could be added in a similar way just by adding a few lines to the CSS.

Well, now, when we have just one Tengwar font, it’s not a big issue. :D

What do you mean? There are a lot of Tengwar fonts, but users are unlikely to see any of them unless they have installed the fonts themselves. (I just see obscure Chinese characters and boxes.) I am proposing that the fonts be linked to in Tatoeba's CSS so that everyone with a decent browser will see them.

Suggestions:

1) Allow information on regional variations. Brazilian portuguese has significant variations from Portugal portuguese. The same with most languages;

2)Include information on language register. For example: formal, coloquial, slang; etc.

Thanks,

You can use tags to show this information. For example, this tag:

http://tatoeba.org/spa/tags/sho...ith_tag/Brazil

has sentences that are Brazilian Portuguese. There are other tags for British English, Mexican Spanish, Belgian French, etc. There are also tags called "formal", "Colloquial", and "slang".

Only trusted users can add tags, but you can leave a comment on the sentence and hopefully someone will add the tag for you.

Olá amigos lusófonos,

Eu queria saber o que vocês acham sobre a utilização da palavra "sentenças" na interface do Tatoeba. Há tempos eu penso que poderia ser melhor usar "frases".

Hi,
I would just like to recommend www.wordreference.com as a great translation tool (for English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian). I swear by it for my English-French and French-English translations. It has definitions from multiple dictionaries, verb conjugation tables, and (most importantly) discussion forums for finding help from native speakers.
Currently clicking the random button for French-English translations here is becoming a bit addictive... Tatoeba is a great idea!

Hi
I want to get Japanese-English sentence example(s) for each Japanese word in a wordlist (1000's of entries) for an iphone app. I want too limit them to ones that only contain kanji of the same level or lower than the target kanji, exported to excel where I'd then review and edit them.
Any ideas on the best way to go about this? (I'm not a programmer!)
Thanks,
Oliver
