Having sentences with audio is an awesome feature of Tatoeba. My suggestion would be to prepare anki decks with these data. Anki (http://ankisrs.net/) is probably the best SRS program available.

Baudelaire already offered to do a deck with chinese audio (http://www.chinese-forums.com/i...#entry238425), but this could also be done for other languages

Any chance of getting a deck with just Traditional characters?

Actually, it would be nice to have a field for Simplified and Traditional characters in the card model, so you could see either or both just by changing the card layout.

[en]I think it'd be interesting for a feature displaying regional variations of a single language to be implemented so that pluricentric languages such as English, French, but also Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Arabic, or languages with a great internal variation like Mandarin and Wu Chinese, would be covered in a broader way, and without some sentences being labeled as incorrect or insignificant.

[es]Creo que sería interesante que se implemente a una función que mostraría variaciones regionales de único idioma así que idiomas pluricentricos como el inglés, el francés, pero también el español, el portugués, el mandarín o el arabe o idiomas con una gran variacion linguistica interna sean cubiertos de manera más amplia, y que algunas frases no sean etiquetadas como incorectas o insignificantes.

You can request tags in the comments, though.
I don't think it would be very beneficial to have hard boundaries between language varieties. There tends to be quite a large overlap and you'd end up cutting off loads of sentences that are perfectly valid in more than one variety.

I can indeed, but I don't find it too much efficient a system for it. I still have sentences untagged. Anyway this doesn't imply the creation of hard boundaries, the whole lot of English sentences could keep being English, and furthermore each be categorized into "generic"/"-" or specific eg australian, british.
It would fit languages like Wu, which has as many speeches as cities, and at least 20, much less, though most often not intelligible, main dialects/varieties. :)

Hi all! I just wanna talk about little idea which takes my mind. (Yes, sorry for my english, but I really cannot keep silence). I've added just 20 sentences to this site and noticed one thing. People add random phrases and translate random phrases. But usually we go to the google translator to translate this concrete phrase, right? From that text or this conversation, etc.
And I think why not do some "client" (let's call it this way) for this site which allow you to give and take translations in real time (when you need it...when you read, or talk with smbd)

Let's imagine the situation.
There are 2 people in tatoeba who don't know each other. Let's call them "girl" and "boy".
These girl and boy have their profiles. (I know there is no features to set your language, but it's just thoughts, let's allow all admissions)

Girl-profile: native = italian, second_lang = russian
Boy-profile: native = russian, second_lang = italian

And for example girl has one russian phrase (here and later rus_phrase) to translate. What can she do with this client (do you remember we talk about it :) )
1. First of all of course try to find the phrase in the current tatoeba-database. (site allows this, of course)
and 2 returns:
- no phrase with need translation (then our girl go to google or translate rus_phrase another way and can add it to the site or don't add it)
- yes, here is your phrase, dear (happiness.. and she'll do another lang-learning stuff)

2. Second feature of our client and this is my proposal.
2.1. Girl sends the request with rus_phrase to the server.
2.2. Server try to find people who can translate rus_phrase to girl's native language
Two returns too:
first return:
yes, here is...this boy, he's online! boy recieve some information (like in icq, skype, etc):
---Girl ask you to translate rus_phrase to girl's-native-language. Could you do it?---
Boy says:
- No! Sorry... (Girls recieve it and again will try to translate phrase with yourself)
- Yes, of course!.. Here is the translation! (Big happiness)) )

second return: no people can help you, sorry.

That's all in common. =) But imagine more people and more requests) I mean... Human-based translation in real time is much better, than google translation (too many google, sorry...)

I want this client will be like p2p-network. I mean "you take" - "you give", but here is will be not films and music (bytes in common), but translations. =)

And of course if girl had recieved need translation it'll add to tatoeba database.
And yes...you will be able to add human who helps you to FB, or twitter, or to friends in tatoeba and will chat with him/her later =)

So as you can see... more people means more positive answers to requests, more progressive language learning, more sentences in database (real need sentences), etc.
Of course, there is some problems with this idea implemention. But! At first I wanna know what do you think about all this crap!))) Thanks tatoeba-community! I hope you're not so hungry to eat me))

PS. Thanks a lot to my friend Ilenia for nice conversation and help.

I'm not sure if I understand right, but what's this about Google Translate. No one is using Google Translate to translate sentences on Tatoeba, I hope...

I mean, we're all translating from the languages we understand to the languages we speak. Right?

{{vm.hiddenReplies[4906] ? 'expand_more' : 'expand_less'}} hide replies show replies
sobr_vamp sobr_vamp February 6, 2011 February 6, 2011 at 10:25:09 PM UTC link Permalink

Yes, absolutely right. No google translations in tatoeba =) But...I meant this: I open tatoeba and go to the search line, type "I wanna find something like that" and then (you can try it) result from site will be "There is no result for this search (yet) but you can help us feeding the corpus with new vocabulary!" So... I'll go to the google translator or another online translator for trying to translate my phrase...And when I've translated it, maybe I'll want to add all this stuff to tatoeba. Maybe not... But that's not my proposal...It's just "what you do when there is no need translation in tatoeba"

My proposal is: All users can ask another users (who can translate from this language to that) help 'em to translate their phrase in real time.
Let's see another example...Maybe more real.
You wanna learn russian)) eheh...And you have a phrase
"I wanna find something like that" in your mind, but no good russian translation for it. (And as we saw no translation in tatoeba)

So...you have that client) imagine icq..you type:
"I wanna find something like that" -> push button "find"
Your request sends to me...Aoooh! (says my client) Could you translate this? My reaction...yes! why not..I type in my client "Я хочу найти что-то вроде этого" -> push button "send".. So.. your english phrase add to tatoeba, my russian translation link to it AND you've recieved my answer to your client. Clear?) I guess so)

Technically, by posting a sentence (let alone under a Creative Commons license) we're asking everyone to translate it for us in real time. We're just short-staffed.

Yes, you're right. But when your sentence will translate actually if users in tatoeba 1. get the sentences randomly and 2. don't know that you want this translation immediately... who knows? Maybe after one minute, or one hour, or one day, etc... I just wanna connect people who wants to get a translation and who can translate. Of course it'll be in tatoeba-canvas. If will be at all. =) Thank you for the comment!

I support your suggestion. Maybe we should add a "need translation quuckly" tag, so other users can notice. We could filter by this tag and add it like the log on the first page. The tag could be short-term only: it should expire after sone time.

Also i like your networking idea. Maybe if we have the language profile feature we could really think about popping up a messahe for users who want to take part in this live translation and fit the requirements. Of course it would also be cool to have this in a messenger, maybe as a plugin for e.g. "pidgin", so one can be contacted without being on tatoeba site.

On the other hand i think there might be already what you are looking for: lang-8.com, but it doesnt feed a database.

Thanks for your comment and support!
1. Yes, I agree with your offer about the tag. I think it'll be easy to implement and very useful for the first time.
2. I guess it's not a very good idea about the plugin for any IM, because there are too many IMs in our free world =)
I think it'll be better to make an extension for the most popular browsers. Let's say: IE, firefox, google chrome, opera (maybe without opera). And most of all people (who wants of course) will be able to use this servise. And I consider it'll be enough for the second time.

What's about your link (lang-8.com). Yes, I know, my idea isn't so brand-new. I have an another example. People can do some writing-exercises at livemocha.com and other people can check it. But! This your phrase "but it doesnt feed a database" is a main point. I think DB and tatoeba-community around this DB is the great stuff for beginning. These two things can help tatoeba (if everything will be alright =) ) to become the large sentence-translator and language-learning site. I really think so.

PS. And of course we should ask TRANG, what does she think about it at all.

and me, except if you find someone else to code it :p

I'm looking at the moment on the new version to organize "news feed" (like "new sentences in French feed" etc.) so that one user will be able to follow some of them and it will display them in his homepage, so we can imagine a "need translation in" feed (though I agree in a first time the tag idea is a good workaround)
and this will be fill trough the API (not yet present, but it' in the wonderful "new version" package :p), so after developing a plugin for browser/IM can be delegated to other (so one will be free to develop a plugin for pidgin if he wants to:))
But yeah I like your idea.

Obviously I would love if Tatoeba could provide real time translations from humans while feeding our free open corpus :P

Rather than tags, you could use public lists. Because not everyone can tag. But our list feature is kind of old...

Very nice! It's a good idea; it shows what can be done with the corpus.
I would suggest however, that the language selection page could also show the language names beside the flags, so people can choose a language without waiting for all the flags to download. You could also use the IMG tag's ALT property, to show a mouseover tooltip for the images.
