No, of course not. It would work like this:

After you sign up, you see a page asking you for languages you are interested in (these could be languages you know, are learning, or are generally curious about). Then, these languages will be shown to you in the drop-downs, and other languages will still be available, perhaps at the bottom of those, or in a separate dropdown called Other Languages.

The languages you are interested in can then be modified in your profile page. The system I'm suggesting is only for language *selection*: to solve the problem of the humongous selection dropdown. Presently, a similar system exists (go to settings > Languages); but it only applies to what languages translations are shown in.

All I think, ultimately, is that the bloated dropdown for language selection should not, in any way, be an obstacle for adding languages. That adding languages takes time away from doing other tasks, though, I can understand.

Maybe we can have a system ask users after registration what languages they are most interested in. That way, they'll only see the languages they want, with all other languages being in an extra "other languages" drop down of some sort.

(I'm aware something like this is already available, but I'm talking about mandatorily asking users right after they've signed up).

+1

As for Urdu, although it is traditionally wirtten in Nastaliq, most websites use Naskh out of necessity. I've sampled many Nastaliq fonts, and the best I've found so far is Jameel Noori Nastaleeq (other fonts usually break in some way, Nastaliq is notoriously difficult to read and render on screen).

I'm using the new font via the Stylish script, and I love it! Perhaps we can specify individual fonts for different scripts? Perhaps users themselves would suggest best fonts.

Either way, I'm all for a move, whatever it may be, away from serif fonts and Trebuchet MS. :P

Well deserved. Congratulations!

I absolutely know that sheepish feeling when you add several translations and wonder if maybe you're doing something wrong. But don't worry, you can link a million translations if the translations themselves are correct.

Something that needs to be made clearer is that by policy, only Directly linked translations are to be treated as 'official' translations. Indirectly linked translations should be trusted about as much as machine translations, possibly even less. Therefore, if B1, B2 and S3 show up, none of these are to be considered a translation of S1 or S2 until a user fluent in both languages constructs links between them.

As for your question about Italian, it must also be kept in mind that it is sound policy to only translate sentences or link them if you are absolutely sure of their meaning. In your hypothetical case, it may be best to leave the sentences be until a user fluent in Bengali and Italian can link sentences as appropriate.

Absolutely! You should add as many translations as you can. I've seen some English sentences with a dozen (or two) translations in Italian or French.

Finally, new languages! And so many amazing ones, too. I didn't even know half of those were up for request.

Thank you so much, Alan!

Reminds me of this video of "Let it Go" from Frozen, combining every language dub of the movie into one sequence.
