What do you mean Marcelo?
I'm one of them.

Oh... I see :-p You recommend these people to be promoted as advanced users :-) Sorry :-p I didn't understand :-) Then, in this case, I strongly recommend:

Sabretou for Marathi.

Fekundulo for Hebrew

and:

halfb1t for English.

:-)

We need to be sure before to promote them (that's from the guide I know but I think that the 2 MUST HAVE points)

1 - understand the concept of indirect translation / main sentence when you tranlate

2 - understand that a sentence must not be edited once it is by itself correct, in case of mismatch, an unlink will be made

marafon marafon December 19, 2012 December 19, 2012 at 5:50:19 PM UTC link Permalink

I second Marcelo's suggestion to promote soweli_Elepanto and I would like to recommend Balamax as well.
I do believe they are fit for the job.

Je m'oppose à la promotion de Balamax. Il a utilisé des traducteurs automatiques pour traduire dans de trop nombreuses langues, de manière tout à fait incorrecte. Exemple http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentence...62565#comments

I support soweli_Elepanto's candidacy and I subscribe to Marina's suggestion about Balamax promotion. Both of them are great contributors and demonstrate strong understanding of Tatoeba principles. I'm sure they will be of good benefit to this project in their new rank. And, last but not least, we just need such people in Russian part of Tatoeba.

Balamax doesn't. He uses robots to translate in too many languages...
I oppose his promotion.

hmmmm.... Is that really so? Well, I can't tell for all languages he claims he knows but his translations from English into Russian are much more precise than any robot I'm aware of usually produce.

But I agree he has done a good job lately

When Balamax translates into Swedish he doesn't use machine translation. He has a lot of unnatural sounding sentences, but that's not a reason for not promoting him. It would be better if he could tag them with '@needs native check' so that natives can check them.

You can't blame him for that since the tagging system is closed to contributors. He could tag through comments, but that's rather ineffective.

To Sacredceltic:I translate as I understand and appreciate any constructive criticism. The marks given on my page rate the languages I had studied since my early childhood from 1 to 5. My French never had mark 5 at the end. Не ошибается тот, кто ничего не делает. - He who makes no mistakes makes nothing.
To Sharptoothed and Marafon, very pleased to read your kind words. I have no special aim in becoming an advanced user. I just try to understand other languages, find sentences that are incorrect. I propose sentences that seem OK to me. I have lost my father in June - lung cancer, vertebral fracture, to say nothing of my mother. My other place of interest is Russian Wiktionary since her death (translations, activities against vandalism, new small-sized articles, corrections). I try to relief nerves after hard working (8 hours) on computer with incomprehensible written texts and schemes full of illiterate errors and inattention.

Balamax, if I understand what you say, you're not interested in becoming an advanced user. It seems to me that someone should only become an advanced user if he or she wants to.

I haven't seen your original sentences or translations, so I have nothing to say about their quality. However, it seems to me that the philosophy you present conflicts with the site's policy. Certainly, it's true that the only way to be sure of making no mistakes is to do nothing at all, but the policy at Tatoeba leans much farther toward the high quality extreme of the spectrum, even if it means low quantity. People are supposed to contribute original sentences and translations in their best (native) language if at all possible. It's great when people are modest about their abilities, as you are, and don't exaggerate their skills. But no one is going to check your profile when looking at a single sentence that you've contributed or translated, much less when a whole bunch of them are mixed with other people's. They will simply trust you, which could cause problems if you haven't really mastered those languages and if there isn't a good mechanism for other people to catch errors.

On a different, and more important, plane, I'm very sorry about your loss of your parents. That must be very difficult indeed. I hope that your companions are able to help you through. I also hope that you feel support from our community here at Tatoeba.

(emotional third take) I am very pleased to read about compassion of your community on the loss of my parents. I am very grateful for your kind help and patience.
We see many mistakes in the sentences on this site and discuss them. They seem to be caused by haste, misunderstanding or carelessness. Many sentences are linked together without paying attention to personal pronouns. But anyway they get corrected (unlinked and so on) sooner or later. I try to avoid activities of mistranslation. Sometimes I ask help from people on Facebook in the languages I don't know. I see that the status of advanced user gives much more possibilities (linking correct translations together, correcting sentences and so on) and greater responsibilities as well. I am convinced that I can be of any help and take this hard responsibility.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll try to live up to the expectations in case I'm promoted.
@sysko: I think I do understand the principles :-)
