** Tatoeba Day #18 **

Tatoeba Day starts now and as usual will end in 24 hours!

If you don't know what Tatoeba Day is about, you can find information about it here:
http://en.wiki.tatoeba.org/arti...ow/tatoeba-day

For those who are already familiar with Tatoeba Day, note that the article has been updated. Please read the section "What can I do during Tatoeba Day?".

For this Tatoeba Day, I will personally be working on the implementation of a better homepage for new visitors.
https://github.com/Tatoeba/tato...ment-192708682
Hats off to @bill and @kamillel for their design work!

There is another topic I'd like to mention: the idea of organizing a Tatoeba coding event. Please read this thread:
https://tatoeba.org/eng/wall/sh...#message_25645
and give your feedback over there if you're interested in the idea.

If you have any question, feel free to ask.

Happy Tatoeba Day!

Problem:
Some users don't correct the sentences that they translated or added. I think they don't even know that someone left a comment on their sentence suggesting some corrections.

Solution:
Display a notification icon on the user's profile page or at the top of the page with the number of new comments.

I agree with this. While we do send notification e-mail, and should continue to do so, displaying a counter has some benefits:

- Not everyone reads their e-mail.
- It's easier to be able to work from the notifications on the site than to have to keep bouncing back and forth between e-mail and Tatoeba.
- The notification counter shows you how many items you haven't seen yet, and gives you an incentive to visit them in order to bring the counter down to zero.

Exactly. I don't know if it's difficult to create a notification center, like the ones we see at the of the page of many websites but it would be great to have this feature on Tatoeba. We could display:

— Latest comments on a sentence.
— Who favorited your sentence.
— Announce new features.
— Show new messages if any.

I'm not a developer, but I think this isn't so simple to implement.

I confirm it's not so simple.

I've created an issue in GitHub: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/1046

I'll have a few things to say about it, when I find the time.

I’m not really fond of this idea. Transifex has this exact feature and I find it annoying because I’m already using email notifications to keep track of things. Let me explain how I’m dealing with my emails. Whenever I finish reading a new email, if I need to do something about it (reply to it, fix a sentence, whatever) either I do it immediately, or if I decide to do it later, I mark the email as unread to remind me I have something to do about it. When it’s done, I set the email as read.

In Transifex, the notifications on the site are useless because I already read them as email, so they are just stacking up. At first, I constantly marked them as read, but I eventually stopped caring and the top-right number is just growing indefinitely. Either way, they are getting in my way.

That's why users can turn their notifications off on most websites. ;)

On Tatoeba Day, do you still collect votes for issues that have already been reported? If so, I can edit the wiki page to say that.

My vote is for issue 1038 ( https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/1038 ). This is about the fact that when a sentence is added at the top of a list page, the list display is not updated to show the new sentence. I know that this worked correctly in the past.

I don't exactly collect votes anymore, but members are still free to vote for issues that especially bother them. I would just like these "votes" not to be simply about saying "I want this to be fixed/implemented" but rather about explaining how it affects you. I guess this is more about collecting user stories than collecting votes.

In the case of #1038, since it's clearly a regression, there's not a lot more to explain.

Okay, thanks.

The issue should be fixed by the way. It can be tested on the dev website along with the new homepage design.

I'm reporting this bug: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/988
If any kind of mistake is corrected, it totally eliminates any advantage one could get to add multiple translations to a single sentence from a smartphone or a tablet, since alternative versions might differ for just one word, so the "copy to clipboard" feature is really necessary for this purpose

TRANG TRANG March 6, 2016 March 6, 2016 at 6:35:50 PM UTC link Permalink

The new homepage is now testable on the dev website: https://dev.tatoeba.org/
Please test it and give us your feedback!

The redesign required to change the layout of the website and the organization of the menu, so let us know if you can still find everything you need.

You can find all the details about what we changed and why we changed it over here:
https://github.com/Tatoeba/tato...ment-192708682

Note that due to a bug, if you are logged into the real Tatoeba, you will need to log out in order to be able to log out of the dev website.

Also note that usually the menu of the dev website is red (to make sure you don't mix it up with the real website), but in this case I temporarily turned off the red styling so that you can experience the new design with the real colors.

I still see texts that should be added to Transifex, e.g. the word "Community" at the top, "Developers" at the end.

TRANG TRANG March 6, 2016 March 6, 2016 at 7:10:28 PM UTC link Permalink

Yes, they have not been extracted and imported into Transifex yet. Before I export the text, I'd like to make sure that there's no typo, or no need to reformulate something :)

So please check all the new text very carefully and report any mistake you see.

I'll import the new strings into Transifex tomorrow.

Tatoeba Day is now over!

There will be a Tatoeba update either in one or two weeks. Until then, please take the time to test the new homepage and the new layout on the dev website (http://dev.tatoeba.org/eng/).

Next Tatoeba Day is scheduled for March 20.

Thank you all for your participation!

I do like the layout on the dev website.

Couldn't find how you would be able to access the Quick Start Guide, though.

There were some additional small changes regarding the new homepage. The summary of the changes are explained here: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/pull/1053

Please test as much as possible on https://dev.tatoeba.org/ (every link in the menu, in the footer, and every page). Let me know if there is any issue.

The new homepage will be released this Saturday if there is no major issue.

personally I'd like to see the color around the search bar a bit darker, at first I had a little bit of difficulty in seeing where to click on the search bar to type anything to search

Wezel Wezel March 11, 2016 March 11, 2016 at 12:14:37 AM UTC link Permalink

It’s not that important, but I feel like the black menu header is too wide, and all the headers together eat up too much space on the screen. Was it made wider to fit the Tatoeba logo?

TRANG TRANG March 11, 2016 March 11, 2016 at 9:48:29 AM UTC link Permalink

The logo could be smaller so it wasn't just for the logo. I wasn't the one who did the design (I only implemented it), but my feeling is that the menu was made wider for a better experience on mobiles.

I actually prefer when things are more spaced so I'm rather fine with this menu. But if the height of the new menu makes it more difficult for you to use the website and you can point out what exactly is more difficult to do, then it would a reason to reduce it.
Otherwise it's just a matter of taste.

I admit that I can’t point out any specific difficulties with the menu, for now at least.

I also confirm what CK says above about his site’s menu. It looks fine on my mobile phone, while Tatoeba’s new menu is almost as low as the current one, contrary to how it looks on a laptop.

That's because CK's site is responsive.
