I, personally, think we should separate the new mobile-friendly design and the current design. Even if mobile phone users became the majority, there are still many people who prefer to contribute from laptops and desktops. I don't really like the new design of the log system.

I don't mind the extra space in the log, makes things airy. I don't, however, like the user avatars in the log.

I chose to put the user avatar because it helps users identify more quickly who is the author of the contribution. Except in the case where all contributions are made with new users who have no custom avatar... But generally, it should help.

Without the avatar, the user would need to check the secondary text and look at the username, but this username is not located in a place where it's easy to find for the eye, and is not perfectly aligned either.

So same comment as for odexed. If you can explain why you don't like the avatar, and it's not just personal taste, maybe I can do something. Otherwise I will leave it like this.

Some avatars are chopped in the new logs, apparently those that are not square enough to fit into a circle.

I wasn't looking for a change to the interface that presents the newly created sentences, but I see how it may improve the graphic appearance for iPads and Android devices, etc., and I'm happy with the change.

In my case, my avatar image was cut off on the right because I had not initially designed it to be square, so I redid it by just centring the old image in the middle of a square shape 128x128 and ensuring that colour filled both sides. The new icon did not appear at first, but when I reloaded the main Tatoeba page, my change had taken effect.

For me, the image looks equally good in either a circle or a square, I think, although this may not be the case for others. I think if others decide to redo their avatar, they should ensure that there is lots of room on all sides around some strong graphic central image.

I would rather not separate the mobile-friendly design from the current design because it means more maintenance. If Tatoeba had more developers, maybe that would be possible. But I'm the only person working on the UI migration, and I do this in my free time (I mean I have a full time job, Tatoeba is a "hobby"). Having to worry about two versions of a UI is too much burden for me.

The changes I introduce should normally not have negative usability impact for desktop users. They are based on a design specification called "Material Design", elaborated by folks from Google, and used through many apps developed by Google. I trust Google for having people much more talented in UI design than myself.

If you don't like the new design for purely personal taste, there's nothing I can do. If you don't like it for usability reasons, and you can explain why, then maybe there's something I can do. But you have to explain what's wrong.

Like what Guybhrush88 did for the icon. Although he didn't clearly explain why the initial icon was not intuitive for him (what did he think this icon was for, or maybe he didn't realize at all this was an icon), he could provided enough information for me to empathize and picture what his problem is.

I will try to explain my thoughts but I warn you that it is all my personal view. It's all about the main page. There are several things I don't like about the new design.

1) It's less compact since you've increased the height of each item so I need to scroll down more to see the comments.
2) You've changed the position of flags and moved them to the right side. Most people are accustomed to read from left to right. I think the former UI was more informative since I could see both the flag and the small circle icon (which is lot more intuitive than just a color bar). You've also removed the background color of items which is another step towards less intuitive UI.
3) The colors became more aggressive. I feel it the same way as if saw an advertisment. The red bar catches my eye. I liked unintrusive colors like soft-green for new sentences in the former UI.
4) Last but not least, I have a feeling that new scheme is worse structured. Now all text related to the sentence is packed inside the row. I find it more difficult to quickly select and copy a sentence this way.

Also, this new style differs too much from the rest of the page; the logs now look alien. Unless TRANG is planning to make everything like the logs, of course.

Yes, it is planned to migrate the whole website: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/1180

2) + 100
I'd interchange the flag icon with the avatar and restore the background color of items.

Aiji Aiji September 4, 2016 September 4, 2016 at 2:03:34 PM UTC link Permalink

I agree. The background colors were softer and easier to identify when sentences are stacked together.
Also, for a matter of consistency, I think flags should stay on the same side (but it is not such a big problem to me).

@Trang, sorry for my poor initial explanation (I was in a bit of a hurry and then I forgot to edit my post), but yes, having three dots didn't make me think it was for getting extra information on a given sentence (I saw the feature almost by chance since I wasn't really understanding the purpose of such icon), while the icon I proposed gives a much clearer idea for that, imho, since it's generally used as an intuitive way for this also in many other sites/places, so users might be more used to seeing this for such purpose

"En son katkılar" bölümü küçültülmeli.
Onun dışında bence sorun yok.

In the latest contributions page (https://dev.tatoeba.org/ita/contributions/latest), I personally don't find the icon to see a given sentence in detail intuitive at all. In my opinion, any icon like this: https://image.freepik.com/free-..._318-27255.png would be much better (the image of the link don't match the licence, i guess, but it shows what maybe could better represent what I mean)

There is a string that doesn't appear in Transifext for translations. In the search page when you make a query, sometimes the message "Recently added sentences may not appear in search results." could appear, and it isn't translatable so far

The strings on Transifex are not updated yet. I'll upload the new strings along with the Tatoeba update.

I confirmed that the bottom pagination buttons for "Sentences wanted" pages misbehave on the main site but work correctly on the dev site.

The new logs look fine to me. I don't have strong feelings about either the old design or the new one.
