I inadvertantly typed in a hyphen (-) instead of the equals sign (=) in my search string:

-personally (instead of =personally)

The URL is: https://tatoeba.org/en/sentence...sonally&to=tur

Obviously this means I wouldn't expect to get any results because a search string like "-personally" is effectively equivalent to searching for an empty string. Instead of getting a more user-friendly, explanatory message, I got:

An error occurred while performing the search. If the problem persists, please let us know and include the error code "65fb71bbcc781" in your message.

I suggest showing the user a more meaningful message including a link to the Tatoeba-specific regexp help page.

Your point about a better error message that points to the search help page is a good one. However, I want to respond to this statement:

> Obviously this means I wouldn't expect to get any results because a search string like "-personally" is effectively equivalent to searching for an empty string.

Searching for an empty string should ideally find *ALL* sentences that match the other criteria (such as the source language and/or target language, if specified). The reason that this often results in an error is that it produces too many results, and something in the code is not handling that well. (For what it's worth, the error message in this case is different, but also unhelpful.) As you say, specifying "-personally" should find all sentences that don't contain the word "personally", and since this is a relatively uncommon word (at least compared to a word like "the"), the search is effectively equivalent to searching for all sentences.

If you search for an empty string and specify the "from" language as English and the "to" language as one that only has a few translations from English, like Madurese, you will see a finite number of results and no error.

I agree there is room for improvment in search errors.

The reason for this error is that the search engine we use, Manticore, does not allow searches that contain only negations, that is to say "all sentences except the ones that contain some word". (Actually, newer versions of Manticore do allow such searches but not by default, I assume it is because it may consume a lot of resources.)

Hey, I'm a new joiner and I have a question so I know how I can best contribute.

Sometimes I see sentences that are vulgar, insulting, or politically charged. What's the best way to handle these?

Do we just translate them regardless of content? Is vulgarity fine as long as it's not a targeted insult? What about sentences singling out certain political views?

There is absolutely no obligation to translate everything you see. There are many good sentences you can translate instead. My advice is to simply ignore any sentence you find questionable.

(Ahogy morbrorper is fentebb kifejtette.)

maaster maaster 3 days ago March 24, 2024 at 8:35:18 PM UTC link Permalink

Én a vegyességet részesítem előnyben.
Amit most gondolsz, a 20.000. lefordított mondat után, lehet, máshogy fogod látni.
A legtöbben sajnos 20 mondat után feladják.
Sok tanulást és szórakozást! Kitartást!

Érdekes volna a "Háromféle irányzat van" 1-1 példával megvilágítanod.

Melyik csoportba tartozik a fent feltett kérdésben szereplő mondatok?

Sometimes I see sentences that are vulgar, insulting, or politically charged. =

mraz mraz 3 days ago, edited 3 days ago March 25, 2024 at 5:00:06 PM UTC, edited March 25, 2024 at 5:05:21 PM UTC link Permalink

irányzatnak is. Míg mások feszegetik a határokat,

sőt >> I see sentences that are vulgar, insulting, or politically charged. <<

Nandixer
Mindkét oldalon van igazság.
Én a „játszol” igét használnám,
de nem
lepődnék meg, ha a „játszasz”
verziót hallanám, főleg vidéken.

Szerintem maaster nem hibából írta a mondatot,
hanem hogy legyen ilyen is fent.
Mraz pedig csak a helyesség miatt aggódott.

mraz
A „játszik” ige ikes ige, amelynek a ragozási sora: játszom, játszol, játszik.
Helytelen nyelvhasználat nem való ide!
Miért kellene követni(e) a tanulatlan, műveletlen nyelvhasználatot?

Hozzátéve: ahogy a hozzászólások a német mondatokhoz, úgy a magyar
mondatokhoz született hozzászólásaim NEM "egyéni fixa ideák".

Javaslatom:
===========
hozzászóláshoz (a véleményed szerinti magyarázattal).

(világjatalmi szó nincs a magyar nyelvben; talán világHatalmi?)

Szeretném itt megosztani néhány gondolatomat a következő alkalomból:

mraz

Unfortunately, Tatoeba lacks the technical means to perform quality control. I'm talking about facilities to downvote or report questionable sentences.

This means that any member is theoretically able to add a lot of objectional content without resistance, as long as it consists of formally correct sentences; they may even receive help from other members with spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Frankly, I'm amazed that Tatoeba over the years hasn't been inundated by lunatic posters. I suppose it's been saved by not being very well known to the general public.

I think ''imbuere'' is the best fit. (source: ''Smith & Hall'', and ''Georges-1910'')
The formula is: imbuere aliquem aliqua re.
