Hi,

When I press the "Show more" button:

I'm getting this error:

https://i.imgur.com/h4PxfEf.png

Is it something with my settings or is it a global problem?

Also, I seem to be having a problem with the "Auto detect" vs an explicit translation language. So it's autodetect by default:

I change it to Ukrainian and press Submit Translation:

This works fine. Previously, it would remember my choice and next time I translated something (after I had done another search, of course, but right after I had changed the language) the translation language would be Ukrainian by default. Now it's "Auto detect" again.

Once more, not sure if something's wrong with my setttings/browser, or whether it is a global problem.

Thanks CK, but it looks like it's a shortcut to Advanced Search with some options predetermined, it's not the same as "Give me X Random sentences in English"

Thanks CK.

If someone removed the Random sentences on purpose, I think they might want to remove the "Show more" button to avoid any confusion:

In this case yeah, we'll have to use the Advanced search for that.

I can confirm that I'm having auto-detect being set to default every time I open a new page on Tatoeba. That is to say, the contribution language is not being remembered.

Me too.

The preselection of the language should be fixed.

Were you using the "Show more" random sentences for translations or for other purposes?

Because there are two possibilities:
1) Make the "Show more" button use the search results.
2) Remove the "Show more" button.

If you were using it to find translations, I probably would opt for removing it. But if you were using it for other purpose, I could consider keeping it and redirecting to the search page. The sentences previously displayed in "Show more" were really just a subset of a search with "Order" = "Random".

Hi Trang,

Thanks for fixing the language preselection so quickly, I really appreciate it, it was quite an annoying bug.

As for the Show more, I was using it to see some random sentences - sometimes I wanted just English sentences, sometimes just purely random. With translation, without translation - it didn't matter. I just liked that. If I was after something specific, I would use advanced search, of course, but that random feature had something fascinating in it and I really liked it for a change.

Yes, I can use Advanced search for something very similar, but I have always had an impression that Advanced search is somehow more demanding to Tatoeba's resources - i.e. it often takes a lot of time, and why the query is being executed, the site is effectively dead - so I can't open the main page in a new tab, for example, until the search is over. The "Show more" seemed to be more light-weighted.

If what I described is a real thing and not just a figment of my sick imagination, I'd prefer the "Show more" button to be removed, because otherwise there will be many more advanced searches going on, on average.

If I'm wrong about the Advanced Search being more demanding than the old "Show more" feature, I'd like the new "Show more" button to do the advanced search returning some random sentences.

I'm fine with any decision, I just don't like the Show button to result into a "Page not found" error, I'm too used to pressing it :)

For the random sentences, I've looked closer into the code and indeed, using the advanced search will be slower than "Show more". The "Show more" page was also performing an advanced search, but had some extra optimization which made it faster.

From what I've tried, the "Random" feature of the advanced search is not too slow when you choose a specific "From" language. If you try to get random sentences from "Any language" however, it's very very slow. And this is actually a known issue[1].

Generally speaking, note that the advanced search is not always going to be slow. It will depend what search you are executing.

As for your usage of the "Show more" feature, I phrased my question wrongly. I wanted to know basically what do you do after you've clicked "Show more"? From what you're saying, it feels like it's a way for you to find something to do on Tatoeba when you don't want to do anything specific. You'll click "Show more" and:
- if you see untranslated sentences, you translate them
- if you see sentences with mistakes, you comment them
- if you see interested sentences, you favorite them or add them to a list
- etc, etc
Is that a correct assumption, or do you actually use "Show more" for a specific type of activity (for instance only for translating sentences)?

I think due to the issue of some users not translating from the correct language[2], which definitely happens from the single random sentence on the Home page, but could also happens on the "Show more" page, I'll remove the button for now. But probably the feature should be reintroduced someday, if my interpretation of your usage of "Show more" is correct.

Yes, you're right, I was using the Show more button when I didn't feel like doing something specific. I did use it for things you described, that was spot on.

Aside from what you said, I was sometimes able to find sentences with wrong flags (you seldom stumble upon them when doing more specific searches), it was also good to find instances when an English sentence can benefit from a few alternative translations - because basically when you do your normal search, you search for sentences that don't have any translations into your language.
