French English don't really match, but Japanese and English are closer.
Actually, that's not quite accurate. From the Oxford dictionary of proverbs: "Commonly used as an assertion that an unfavourable situation will eventually change for the better."
That meaning matches the French and the Japanese. The Japanese doesn't just mean that everything comes to those who wait. It's actually a very similar image to the French. I think you relied on one translation or one explanation of the proverbs and that's not always enough.
