I've been using Tatoeba mostly on Firefox myself for years, and I'm using Firefox right now.

It's always been working well. Can you share some screenshots of your issues?

> "chips" is parallelepipeds-shaped food

That description gave me a good chuckle! Thanks for that.

It brings back memories of my high school days when we would casually throw around words like "rectangular parallelepiped" to describe things and try and keep a straight face.

There was a discussion where someone pointed out that shekitten had suspended her account, to which I replied:

"I don't think you can suspend your own account. That was probably done by the admins for some reason."

My message, as well as the original poster's message, was hidden with the following note:

"The content of this message goes against our rules and was therefore hidden. It is displayed only to admins and to the author of the message."

The thread itself:

https://tatoeba.org/en/wall/sho...#message_39897

I can't really see other messages in this thread now, that's why I can quote only my post.

I re-read the rules, and I don't quite understand what rules were the messages against. Is it possible to get some explanation, please?

shekitten is a quality contributor, can she be unsuspended?

Nice one.

If you use the search tool:

https://tatoeba.org/en/sentence...unapproved=any

you get a different number: 777,243

I wonder why

Sounds cool! If you do do it one day, please let me know, I'd be happy to use your script.

deniko deniko 2023-februaro-24 2023-februaro-24 12:18:50 UTC link Konstanta ligilo

I've never thought of an external script. That's an interesting idea.

So are you thinking something like a Chrome plugin?

Also, how do you imagine it from the user interface point of view?

My first thought was modifying the search page. So, for example, you have some search results, it's a list of 20 sentences (and translations). I add a checkbox, "Add tag" to all of the main sentences (maybe to the translations as well), and I add an entry field where you can actually enter the tag. Then press a new button "Apply", and it applies the tag to the selected sentences only.

Do you think something like this is achievable with an external script? Or did you see it very differently?

Thank you!

Is there a way to mass-tag sentences?

For example, assuming my last 40 sentences were about chess and I want them to be tagged as such, is there a faster way to do it comparing to clicking on each one individually and typing/pasting the tag into the tag field?

I've done that one by one for now, just wonder if there's a better way to do it.

I think he selected sentences with audio recordings, not just his own audio recordings? The fact that most of them belong to CK is kind of irrelevant, other English contributors can contribute by adding more audio, which we all would appreciate.

Personally I have always preferred working with sentences with audio recordings because they're more reliable. If they were voiced by a native speaker, the probability of a mistake is very low (although sometimes the recording doesn't match the sentence, but it happens very rarely, and I listen to a ton of sentences every week).

Wow, that's a pretty cool update!

Would it be possible to add some information about "self-identified" accent? At least some high level accent information - (so, for English, it could be American, British, Australian)? And maybe something more detailed ("...born in Newcastle, grew up in Liverpool")

deniko deniko 2022-majo-16 2022-majo-16 13:18:47 UTC link Konstanta ligilo

I actually prefer the term "an indirect translation" to "a translation of a translation" as more elegant.

I do acknowledge it might be a tad more confusing to those who don't understand how they work and that you shouldn't assume they could be linked without giving it a good think.

While translation errors happen, the effect of "Chinese whispers" is real.

In 2020 we had a "cloud" of 400 thousand sentences, all linked to each other through other languages. Some people tried to break the cloud apart by finding wrong translations, so it's probably smaller now. I need to run my crawler again somehow to take a look of it.

https://www.reddit.com/r/tatoeb...clouds_take_2/

As an example, there was a path (through direct translations) from sentence "Tom is beautiful" to "You know what I'm saying?". Other sentences in that same cloud, each of them being somehow linked through multiple translations to each other:

That's why if you get A as an indirect translation of B, and it's a clearly wrong translation, most probably... it's just ok. Indirect translation are cool and good candidates for being direct translation, but be aware that you can't really rely on them too much if your goal is to find translations of B.

> se perderían muchos empleos de traductores, intérpretes, guías turísticos, lexicógrafos, librerías de idiomas, etc..

I mean, you can use the same type of argument for any kind of progress.

Look at all these professions, for example:

https://www.ethicaljobs.com.au/...o-longer-exist

Yes, if we all spoke the same languages we wouldn't need translators in our everyday life, but we'd still need historical linguists, and translators from old extinct languages. So the profession wouldn't die out, it would just shrink in numbers.

The cultural argument is good though, I think.

Also, I do believe language enrich each other by simply co-existing, and by being able to borrow certain words and concepts from other languages.

I used to write Kiev all the time before 2014, but in 2014 Russia invaded Luhansk, Crimea and Donetsk and I switched to Kyiv for political reasons and I kindly ask everyone to use this name in English as a sign of respect.

Obviously, we can't make anyone do it, hence it's just a polite request. Please consider doing it.

Please note that the BBC already made this change, as well as many other mainstream English speaking media. From purely linguistic point of view, that should be more than enough to follow suit and feel comfortable about it.

I don't think old sentences should be changed. An alternative translation will work.

Thanks tokzyk. All those links are very useful.

My sister crossed the Ukrainian-Polish border literally 10 minutes ago, and she doesn't know Polish at all. Will be using all this as the base material.

And why would I say it about Israel? They're good people. And the Palestinians are good people. They will find a common language, I'm sure.
