I personally do not think this sentence sounds right. I would write "Doctors have made some startling discoveries,". The sentence in its current form sounds like something out of a textbook.

i would't say it sounds as if it was extract from a textbook, because i've already seen this kind of construction in some sciences-related articles, but at least the construction you propose seems more widely used.
