I like the idea of choosing a name together a lot. As り is also in りさ, I'll try to pick a character for it.... I think 理 (reason, logic, but maybe also one who 'tidies up') would be fitting for Marina. What do you think? 😊

You said "ocean" and "summer" matched the original Latin meaning. I think that's precisely how 海夏 came to be. Sometimes people will choose characters solely based on their meaning, even if they do not represent the syllables of the name, but then they cannot be read properly by the uninitiated unless they have the syllables written next to them (so-called 'furigana'). So I suppose they used the meaning of "Marina" (= a woman related to the sea) and wrote 海, but that would not make a proper name yet, so they added 夏. This character is read "na-tsu" (= summer), of which they kept only the first part.

Actually my first candidate was 璃. While representing "ri" (or "li") in names, it seems to stand originally for a blue and transluscent stone, which may possibly capture the image of the sea, too. Maybe it would also be fitting. 😊

Well, I'm still relying on you to make a choice :)

When I saw your comment, I thought Marina would like to use "海(ocean)", "夏(summer)", and so on. And then I fell asleep while thinking about it. Sorry. 😅

How about the character 万 "ten thousand"?

It's a name that wishes for many talents and happiness. I have an image related to literature. For example "万葉集(Manyoshu)" "万年筆(fountain pen)". 俵万智(Machi Tawara), who wrote a popular poem; "「寒いね」と話しかければ「寒いね」と答える人のいるあたたかさ. (How warm - with you here to say - "it sure is!"
whenever I say -"it sure is cold!") by サラダ記念日" also uses this character. I think it is a lovely character.

別に「トム」を使うことを否定しているわけではありません。良いところもあれば、悪いところもあるそういう意味です。

日本人は、基本的に漢字は嫌いではないと思います。漢字離れもしていないし、好きだから、自分の子に色々な漢字を当てようとするんだと思います。（もちろん、ひらがやなやカタカナを使た名前もありますが）それを、掲示板で、こんな風に書かれるのはちょっと日本人として気持ちいいものではありませんでした。

そして、日本語の漢字の名前は、小さい子供たちが初めて意識する漢字です。その漢字一つ一つに親の想いが込められていて、子供たちも自分の漢字、友達の漢字を見ながら、自然に漢字を覚えていきます。そう考えると「トム」だけになってしまうのは、残念なことだと思いました。

「じゃぁ、ここにある全ての名前に漢字を当てはめるつもりか？」という意味なのかもしれませんが、そんなつもりは毛頭ありません。漢字の名前を付けるのは大変な作業なんですよ。
