Hello everyone,
I have been working on a script to sort Chinese sentences from Tatoeba starting with sentences composed of the most commonly used Chinese characters in Tatoeba. You can view the list at the following address:

I don't know how to add languages here. I have a lot of sentences I want to add for Seediq language, the language featured in the new film "Seediq Bale" which is now premiering at the Venice film festival. I can also add many more for the languages spoken around Seediq, such as Atayal, Saisiyat, Amis, Bunun. These may not be popular languages, but they have a 7000-year history and lots of interesting stories and legends from the beginning of time (I've been collecting as many as I can, and translating them). Thanks for your attention.

The reason was that they were clearly interesting only for those implied in the conversation, for this purpose we have private messages (that can be used to exchange e-mail adress/ an IRC/ Jabber channel etc. if you find the private messages not convenient_
Trang being not free these days, I've taken this decision (delete arbitraly some messages) alone. I will discuss with her about this as soon as possible. For those who wants, I've kept a static page of that thread before my deletion (some message are not present because I get the idea of saving it during the process, sorry I'm a human...) and I can send it to you (just send me a private message for this)
If you think some messages should have been deleted, same => private message
In the future, I will be less laxist, and as soon as I see something that I judge (waiting we define a clear policy with Trang) that some messages will be more appropriate as private messages, I will resend them as private messages to the sender and the concerned people.
Of course I know we're all between mature people and I will not need to do this anymore and I will be able to keep focus writing this new version.
Thanks everybody to understand this, because except these little problems of living all together, you're marvellous (and we will soon reach one million sentences and 0 casualty I hope).
Since I'm primarily studying Japanese, is there a way for me to attract a Japanese translation to my sentences or do I have to just hope that a Japanese speaker will find it?
There's no system for translation requests regarding a specific language. You might just want to contact a few Japanese users and kindly ask them to translate your sentences.

Be careful. Other people here do not speak your English. I have noticed extremely varying kinds of English present on this "multilingual-all-languages-and-cultures-acceptable" website. If you use the 2nd Person Plural Pronoun "you guys", you may be reprimanded, even though in your naïve corner of the world, this is completely natural, friendly, and acceptable.
If you "pop" over to another channel, some of the European readers may misinterpret this as messing around with virgins. If you say it sounds like a "blast", again your European counterparts may think you would like to start a war of words, and may return your blast with a blast of their own.
So from a sociolinguistic analysis, I appeal to you to "tread lightly" and choose your words carefully in this forum.
Aside from there being "extremely varying kinds of English present", I totally disagree with everything you just said.
I will continue to use "hey guys" so long as the vast majority of people on this forum do not take offense. So far the vast majority of people clearly have not taken offense or have not raised the issue.
That is all I want to say on the matter, but thank you very much for your opinion.
I think the best way is to try yourself to create your own japanese sentence and ask for a native check.
Hey guy, although the website doesn't offer such a service, some people like to exchange their services by proof-reading each other sentences. I suppose you could send some private messages to Japanese-spoken members to ask something similar.
Another option is the IRC channel where some of us hang about : you could ask us to translate your sentence. If you are lucky someone will :)
Depending on your native language(s), you may try to post a message here asking for help of Japanese speakers around there and try to make a deal with them if some of them are interested in your language(s) :P

First since "guys" is just a way to address a plural group of people, equivalent to Scottish "youse" or "y'all" or "yous", and there are lots of forums threads on the internet about that in length. The "guys" word might be colloquial, but certainly not impolite.
Second, because you should just mind your own business: nobody needs someone telling them how they should behave, and especially not you, who have scored the highest amount of quarrels in the whole tatoeba history. Enough now.

"You guys" and "you all" can be quite commonly heard is restaurants by waiters and waitresses.
Do you guys know what you want to drink? Do you guys need another minute? Do you all know what you want to eat?
This is in western New York. In the South, you'll hear "y'all" and over on Long Island you'll hear "yous guys".

There is a very clear and obvious sociolinguistic culture clash here. Those involved cannot see themselves from the outside - in, so let me be of service.
I understand American English quite clearly. I have a linguistics background (science of language).
In American English, "you guys" = 2nd person plural pronoun, equivalent to French "vous", German "ihr", there is no distinction between female or male.
The normal friendly greeting is abbreviated to "hi guys", and friendliness was the intent on arrival. Since this user's naïve world view is vastly limited to their (=his/her) Americanisms, they were uncapable of communicating at the acceptable standard set forth by this multilingual and openly-accepting-of-all-cultures website.
The Europeans in this exchange are at fault for reading into the word "guy" as a kind of noun describing males. This is incorrect, as I have pointed out, "you guys" is a pronoun meaning "plural you".
The Europeans have also taken an offensive stance to anybody arriving with an American naïve attitude of the world, when instead they should be taking the opportunity to guide and lead this young, naïve American into the ways of the world rather than reprimanding him/her. This person probably has no idea what crime he/she has committed by using the 2nd Person Plural pronoun as he/she does with everybody he/she knows in his/her normal, everyday, social life. On the surface it looks like everybody is using English, the same language as he/she uses, but deep down, it's not the same language, and carries heavy penalties for native-like use.
American and European culture vastly differ.
In America, people go to events to "make friends". It could be the assumption, therefore, by an American to arrive where a group of people are congregated, and naïvely shout out, "hi guys!" and immediately make lots of friends.
However, in France, this is not possible. There is a level of formality present in all social exchanges, and to become a true "friend" takes many years of building that relationship.
I would suggest to all parties to toss your naïveté, stereotypes, and preconceived assumptions aside. And make a new assumption, that not everybody here speaks the same English, some of them actually using a native variety that feels natural and friendly from where they come.
This is just as much a culture clash as it is a linguistic clash.
Sysko, removing these posts is your prerogative, but analyzing, solving, and educating is your obligation.

I suggest you take a look at my response to your post above. Please note, I am not American and I am not a teenager. I will be 21 years old soon and I am an English male born in England and I have lived here all my life.
Just because I haven't lived in 10 different countries doesn't make me xenophobic or ignorant to other cultures, I'm simply using the English I have always used and I am not prepared to change the way I speak just because one person on this website decided to take offense for, as far as I can see, no apparent reason.
If you want create some kind of worldwide rigid standard for English, why stop there? Why don't you do the same for French, Spanish and every other language you can think of?
You should make an assumption that the proportion of easily offended people you are talking about is very very slim compared to the ones who don't seem to mind at all.

I agree Tatoeba lacks moderation and that trolls are let loose writing more insults on the wall than they contribute sentences (there should be a rule there, through which, save for the first one, one should be able to write only 1 post on the wall for every 200 sentences they contribute...just a thought...), but sysko does a wonderful non-paid job developping this marvellous service and you can't reproach him this.

Welcome to Tatoeba! I already suggested adding sign language support once (http://tatoeba.org/epo/wall/show_message/4699) although I dont speak sign language (just interested).
How well can you gesture in ASL? Do you have some video equipment? You could try to add example videos through platforms like youtube or vimeo and then post a link as a comment to the corresponding english sentence like this: "@ASL-video: http://example.com/urlofthevideo" (and someone would add a tag "@ASL-video"). I guess this would be the easiest way to soon start adding videos. Maybe later we can directly integrate the videos into Tatoeba.

Tatoebians must be very egotistical, because most lists I've seen have 的 and then 一 on top. ;-)
I noticed that too. I think a lot of the contributors are learners of Chinese rather than native speakers and that alters the frequency of characters. Oh another thing I should have made more clear. My script is rather unsophisticated and only counts up sequences of characters not words. Furthermore, characters may be counted more than once. for instance the 13,450 我s are counted again in the 2,064 我们s at number 21.
actually if you take a look at the dump which expose the owner id of the sentence, most of them belongs to 3 users, all Chinese natives. But I think it come from the fact most of these sentences are translation of English/French/Dutch sentences, and most of the sentences are oral and short sentences, while list are based on literral corpus.
My apologies all for jumping to conclusions. Sysko those are some good points. Thanks for the info. ^^
