I think the more polite term is 崩御.

The sentence was actually given to me by a Japanese as a correction of a sentence I sent her.
Probably she thought that I didn't know this word "崩御" (and she was right...).
As I avoid adding Japanese sentences that have not been checked by native I will ask her again about the same sentence but with the word "崩御".
If it is okay, I will change it.

That's not quite true. Some use the words, others don't. I think I have never used the word "崩御" and hardly heard it in my daily conversation.
