Why is this on the spreading list? It only has 2 translations from a couple months ago

@DJ_Saidez, #10847683 is a derived sentence that you translated into English.

To enter the list, a sentence must have at least two links to sentences in other languages and from other contributors. Orphan sentences and post-linking are not taken into account.

This means that an original sentence must appeal to at least two speakers of two different languages to be selected. On the other hand, a derived sentence only needs to be retranslated once (by a third member into a third language).

I just checked. 517 out of the 2,657 sentences (about 20%) on "Rated as 'not OK' 🔴" are also on "Spreading in Tatoeba ✨"

I wish you could come up with a more descriptive name for your "spreading" list. "Spreading" sounds like "trending", which is misleading, I think, and could cause confusion.

@CK, No big surprise, 18% of the whole corpus is in the "Spreading in Tatoeba ✨" list.

Being inserted in the corpora of 3 different languages is a bit like a spread for me. But I am open to a better wording...

Why not brainstorm off the idea of the phrase you just used?

I get the feeling that your list is an experiment in trying to come up with an AI-like system to find sentences that may more likely be better than others, and that you would like to help members find such sentences.

If this is the case, here are some things to consider.

* Give your list a name that lets people know of the experimental nature of the list and its purpose.

* Fine-tune it a bit, so that sentences that are rated "not good" aren't on the list.

* Increase the number of translations (languages, members who translated, etc.) from 2 to minimally 5 or possibly even 9 or so. In other words, make it a more select list, with likely a higher accuracy rate at reaching its goal.

* Remember with the random sentence showing on the main page, people don't always necessarily go out of their way to find "good" sentences to translate, but may just translate anything that they see. The fact that a sentence has been translated twice doesn't necessarily mean that it is better than a sentence that has fewer than 2 translations. New members often don't realize that we have a number of sentences added by non-native speakers, and even native speakers, that are not very natural-sounding or are grammatically wrong.

@Ck It would also be misleading. You and I both know that the 3-language condition is not the only constraint.

What happens when a sentence in the "not OK" list is no longer not OK?

No idea. Maybe it's Tatoeba technical trouble.

@DJ_Saidez, This list is computed from the weekly exports. This means that any sentence that is no longer "not OK" should be removed in the next Saturday update.

I don't think there are good and bad sentences. The value of a sentence is subjective.

What we do know is that there are sentences that people have taken the time to translate, and others that have not had that chance (yet).

The threshold of 2 strong links is high enough to keep the longest and least universal sentences at bay, but low enough for any new sentence in any language to have a chance to enter quickly.

Of course, there are plenty of sentences that are not on the list and that some of us would find worth spreading. That's why we shouldn't promote this list too much and also keep hunting for sentences we like randomly.

Would you say that sentences with several errors/deviations in grammar or expression don't count as "bad" sentences, considering the kind of sentences Tatoeba wants to collect?

I was talking about the "Spreading in Tatoeba ✨" list. Of course sentences with grammatical or spelling errors are "bad" and should be corrected. I was just trying to say that I don't consider that a sentence that spreads is "good" and that a sentence that doesn't spread is "bad".

By having your list set as "Public" rather than "Listed," you are promoting it quite a lot, since there is a link shown to everyone to your list from every page that is on the list.

You don't need to set a list to "Public" to have it appear as a searchable list in our advanced search form. It only needs to be "Listed."

Note that you will still see a link on each page for your own lists, even if they aren't set to public, but others will not see them.
