"give dysentery to": Does that mean Tom has dysentery himself?

(If so, I wonder if there aren't more likely ways of transmission than pots and pans.)

I sort of have doubts about the verb "give" in this sentence.

I've seen "give" with chlamydia etc. where it is used in the sense that a person gives "their" chlamydia" to someone else. i.e. that the person is the source of infection.

With dysenteria, a person can be source, vector or just someone who failed to interrupt the chain of transmission, like a dishwasher.
