I guess strictly speaking that could be the case, but it's not what first comes to mind.:)

This could have 2 meanings if the nurse is male. The first is more likely, I think.
1. A nurse took the temperature of a man (other than himself).
2. A nurse took his (own) temperature. -- Usually to be clear, we would insert the word "own" in this case.
