The Arabic can either be a statement that they helped each other, or a command. In both cases the sentence would be pronounced the same. To make it clear that it's a statement, you can say:
هما ساعدوا بعض في الواجب.

meanwhile, you can add your sentence as an alternative translation :), although I don't think هما works that well in egyptian :P (unless you meant همَّ)

Hmmm, was just thinking of posting this on the wall, then thought maybe it wasn't the right place.

It's tough writing Egyptian Arabic. Do you keep it as close to MSA as possible (like writing ق not ء) or write what you pronounce? The same goes for looking at other people's sentences, are they ok or not? Good thing we're not writing in Franco-Arab (Arabic written in Latin letters), then it would be even more confusing.

With هما vs. همّ, I would say the other way around. Errr, this is really confusing. I thin audio would fix it. Then it wouldn't matter how we spell things. ^_^

With هما vs. همّ, personally I can't see how it can be written with an aleph, rather than a fat7a...at least that's not how I hear it pronounced :P
