I'm sorry but I think you've mistaken "rentrer" for "revenir" in both translations. Rentrer is "going inside" and revenir is "coming back".
But beside that, this French sentence is very specific, we use it when we are learning a lesson and, after some time, we begin to remember it, to grasp it. Literally it means that the lesson begins to get inside our head.
Hold on, though. "Rentrer" can also take the meaning of "to return"/"to come back"/"revenir" (as well as numerous other meanings). That being said, all right. I'll think of a better translation.
Hm, yea you're right. The night brought new examples to me. Rentrer à la maison = Revenir chez soi. By the way there's another meaning to the sentence (yea, the night was generous) : for instance if you're using a balm, it's getting absorbed by your skin. I remember an English phrase which was "to rub it in" but I don't think this is a good translation here, maybe you can help on that one ?
"settle in", maybe?
