Actually, sharptoothed didn't give a translation, at least in this thread. He just said that he doubted that the Russian matched the English, but didn't elaborate. Any further comments would be welcome.

I can see how "How long have you been learning French?" can loosely overlap with "Have you been studying French for long?", so I can imagine that DeepL might equate the two, but I would not say they're the same thing.

The former would be answered with a phrase like "For three years" or "Since I was thirteen years old." The latter would be answered with "yes" or "no."

Of course. But someone could also answer "Have you been studying French for long?" with "Yes, for three years" or "Yes, since I was thirteen years old." And perhaps the person asking the question was actually interested in getting the more extensive answer.

When I meant a similar result as sharptoothed, I meant that, when I put his Russian translation into DeepL and translated into English, it gave a sentence that matches the original Japanese in meaning

The questions of type "Ты давно...?" usually imply quite a precise answer like "For three years" or "Since I was ten". It's a common way to ask "How long" and I would translate it like that.
