Are you sure that "他是美国人" can be translated like that? It clearly refers to a person.

I'm not certain. 他 can be he, she or it, but since 美国人 does seem to refer to a person I am likely to agree that this is an incorrect translation. In fact, 他 is used to mean he or she only when the gender of the object is not certain so unless this sentence is being used in a context where you cannot tell the gender of the person being discussed even "She's (or She is) American" would be incorrect.
It is my understanding that if you were specifically writing about a female you would use 她 instead of 他. My translation was based on the spoken Chinese sentence in which she, he and it, are pronounced exactly the same.
