If you have noticed a drop in the number of users don't worry it's normal I've just deleted ~6000 accounts that was created by a automatize process (they've been there for a long time but I didn't find time before to delete them)

I'm just curious. What is his story? :) By the way I feel I should remind you the Turkish interface still remains as translated by him (to a very big part). Do you consider an update from launchpad?

Well to make it short that's a very young teenager that get angry very easily and that for now more a year spent is time alternatively by creating new account (when he get a new IP address) or by trying to spam the server etc.

For the translation in Launchpad, yes that's in my todo list, actually before that was not me who was in charge of taking care of this but Trang so I admit to not know the process so it may take some times (as I've also received a lot of emails about user proposing me audio recording etc.)

Topic: Email notifications

Personally I feel it annoying to receive email notifications, though I feel happy to receive "谢谢" "Thanks" "Dankon" :D

I am afraid my comments will annoy others and I have tried to avoid unnecessary comments. As a result, I used not to express my thanks to those who point out my errors.

What's your opinion about Email notifications?

I set up a separate folder in my e-mail account, where mail notifications are stored automatically. I check the entire folder once in a while.

I'm not sure I understand why receiving emails is annoying although I heard this complaint several times...I receive dozens every day...it's just a matter of organising your inbox through rules and keywords...If your e-mail service doesn't enable this, you should consider dumping it and moving to modern and efficient services such as Gmail.
If bandwidth or load is the problem, you can limit the download of emails to headers...Tatoeba's notifications are not very big...

sysko sysko 2012-aŭgusto-12 2012-aŭgusto-12 21:56:04 UTC flag Report link Konstanta ligilo

personnaly i did use the "谢谢" / thanks as a way to notify the user I've applied the correction so that if (s)he is an advanced contributor he can check one last time and apply a "OK" tag if necessary. after if you're quite active you can desactivate the email notification and only rely on the feature provided by the interface

there's on your profile page a way to see the comment only on your sentences or you can check the sentences on which you posted comments, (or you can apply a tag @change and filter on chinese sentence to see if they've been corrected)

After if the user is a simple user, i most of the time only put a "thank you" comment one time a day.

Topic: How to guarantee the quality of sentences?

What if I have commented the sentence but get no response from the owner? I mean neither did he/she comment back nor did he/she modify his sentence. Such sentences exists and they do harm to the corpus.

examples:
http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/867949
http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/1368578
...

I am sorry I have not searched the "wall" or read through the blogs to understand Tatoeba's policy to avoid these sentences. But it exists and we can't ignore it.

My solution:
split the comment system into two separated system Correction and Annotation.

Correction is merely for correcting the sentence. Contributors post Corrections only when he/she finds "bugs" in the sentence. And when the sentence is modified and is OK, contributors should remove their Corrections. I mean Corrections should have a life circle. Just like human beings, no Corrections should be immortal. And Corrections will be sent to the owner's email if he/she enables it.

Annotation is for annotating. You are not supposed to annotate in the sentence but you have the right to annotate the sentence outsides maybe on the Annotation. You can post useful information or acceptable interesting comments to the sentences.

the tags preceded by a @ sign are meant to undergo some sort of action:
@change
@change punctuation
@needs native check
@change flag
@change or delete
@translation check
...

the correct use of these tags "guarantees" the actions will eventually be made effective (by the owner or a moderator), unless the owner implicitly refuses.
That's where the role of moderators is important.

In my opinion, this "human" system of correction may not be the best, but I consider it good to keep this "human".

By the way, do we have any active moderator well versed in Chinese?

At times, the service sending notification e-mails didn't work. Sometimes, e-mail services don't work. You have to renew your requests when you get no replies...
I use lists for sentences that never get a reply and I renew my requests every now and then, when I have time, until somebody reacts.
The rule is that a corpus maintainer may change a sentence after 14 days after a request has not been addressed. I disagree with this rule. The request should be renewed at least once and the delay extended to 1 month, in order to take holidays into account...

I tend to disagree with your idea of splitting annotations and corrections. That would impose to define what the difference is, precisely. Sentences are not truths. There is no such thing as a perfect sentence or translation. Subsequently, corrections are often as subjective as annotations...

# Explanations of Corrections and Annotations:

It is just a raw idea. I hope it may help improve the system.

Corrections will be deleted if the sentences have been corrected. It should be objective.
Annotations will remain for others. And those can be subjective.

# My Thoughts

I just want to confirm that it was a problem and it is still a problem. And I hope we can figure out a solution and therefore it won't be a problem. We talk about it thoroughly so that sysko or others can make improvements to the system.

# Thanks
Thanks to sacredceltic, I learn the usage of lists.

Hi all:

I have translated this article(http://blog.tatoeba.org/2010/02...-tatoeba.html) into Chinese(http://home.ustc.edu.cn/~sadhen..._Tatoeba.htm). Hope it will be helpful for you.

I have never translated such a long article. Though I already have gained some translation experience on Tatoeba. But those are only involved with sentences.

I have tried my best to make my translation in good quality. If you find any problem, please contact me. And I simply use OmegaT to tranlate the source directly from the original page. Part of its html content may be removed later.

A small question for Amastan:
I noticed berber uses a lot of sounds which, according to the writing at least, seem identical or anyway pretty similar to many sounds the arabic alphabet can represent. My question is, why do you (or does the language) use latin alphabet instead of the arabic one, which, despite the differences in culture, would seem pretty convenient and obvious due to the geographical positions of the two cultures?

they don't use arabic to write in tamazight.

tamazight is written with two alphabets. latin and tifinagh.

Oh, I didn't know the language had its own alphabet. Since you guys aren't writing berber using it, I suppose that's because it's not supported or something like that.

@Demetrius: vowels cannot be expressed so clearly even using diacritics, since most diacritics have different uses from one language to another (such as the use ¨ has in french, which is totally different from the use german has of it), and if one doesn't use a phonetic alphabet, he most often can't express (or anyway it's way far from any standard) closed or open vowels nor the kind of articulation of them, while consonants have a lot less approximation and ambiguity on this side.

I'm not an expert, but what about the vowels?
