I wonder whether there might be copyright issues with these sentences... Many are taken from https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/...otter/summary/ and some are quotations from the book or the movie. Could someone who knows about copyright more than I do have a look at this user's English sentences?

I'll check the Spanish ones and unblock them.

Bonjour et bienvenu,

on peut ajouter des etiquettes, comme par exemple celle-ci:

https://tatoeba.org/es/tags/sho..._with_tag/2509

Mais seulement les utilisateurs avancés peuvent le faire, alors il faudrait que vous laissiez un commentaire sous la phrase.

I am afraid you still didn't quite get how Tatoeba works. If you want accurate translations you have to look only at the direct translations. Nobody stated that indirect translations (translations of translations) were correct translations of the first sentence because then they'd be directly linked and become direct translations Let's say we have the sentence Tom loves Mary, and it's translated into French Tom aime Mary and from French to German Tom liebt Mary, any advanced contributor could link the German sentence with the English one since they are perfect translations from each other. So nlw we'd have two direct translations: the French and the German. Then someone adds the translation Tom Mary'yi sever and since it can have both meanings to love and to like, it's translated into Spanish as A Tom le gusta Mary (Tom likes Mary). This last sentence wouldn't be a correct translation of the English one so they wouldn't be linked, but given that we have no context both translations would be possible if you base on the Turkish sentence, it wouldn't be changed or unlinked and would remain as indirect translation of the English one, making it clear that they don't mean the same. And since every language has polysemic words and ambiguities, you'll never get a sentence that can make that circle without getting also other translations that don't match among the different languages.. Unless of course you want to leave these other meanings aside, which would be misleading for learners and which would make the corpus poorer and harder to collaborate, since people would have to speak several different languages in order to translate a sentence.

We have QA here, as you have seen yourself: if a sentence has a mistake, a comment is left on the sentence and after two weeks if the user didn't react the sentence is corrected. If a direct translation is wrong but still a correct and natural sentence on it's own and it hasn't been translated, the user is asked to change it, if the sentence has been translated it is unlinked from the original sentence since they don't match and thus a new chain is created.

People are not directly encouraged to think critically but are free to suggest things that can help the project. Their ideas will be read as yours have been, and debated. However, given that you are not being clear about what you actually want, it's hard to debate an abstract idea nobody is sure of having understood. If it's about that of translating word for word to help beginners, I think it's been clearly exposed that Tatoeba is not a platform to teach beginners by creating unnatural sentences, to get the same result a learner can use google translate, but a Corpus of sentences in which all sentences have to be natural and correct on their own, If they are translated the translations have to be accurate, natural and correct, which makes translating not so easy sometimes. The reason why correctness and naturalness is so important is that we don't know what projects will use our data, some might make a linguistic research about the use of an expression, others might search for a natural translation of an idiom and others might want to learn a language from scratch or create an app to teach languages.

I am not only a language learner but also a teacher and someone who has lived abroad and seen the mistakes people make, I don't know if you heard about the fossilized mistakes, those things taught at the beginning that the student takes for granted to be correct but which is not correct or not natural; these are the ones that students need a lot of time to get rid of, word for word translations and unnatural translations would cause that, while a natural, correct translation accompanied by an explanation would bring the student the understanding without those fossilized errors. We provide the sentences, the app developer or textbook writer must bring the explanation.

By the way I didn't find it nice of you to start calling people who contradicted your ideas "bullies" when they have neither bombarded you with messages, nor said offensive things nor deleted your sentences. They were trying to explain to you how this website works but you didn't even listen to them and you still keep your own conclusions about how Tatoeba works. I hope you will at least read my comment and finally understand.

I like translating the untranslated Turkish and German sentences, in the other languages it's kind of random.

je l'ai déliée de la phrase anglaise.

if you find ours too challenging you can try to translate arh's sentences, they're usually shorter and easier. I didn't include him before because sometimes he does repeat the same structure in a bunch of sentences. They have also the plus of often (if not always) having audio.

Some sentences are based on Tatominer vocabulary requests for Spanish, so I don't know if they're requested to be translated into another language.

The simplest way to find them is to search for untranslated sentences in Spanish written by any of us. For now there's no list or tag, I honestly didn't give it too much importance, I found it a pity but I thought that sooner or later they'd be translated.

We have right now two users (saverius and Seael) who add lots of original sentences with missing vocabulary and different structures in Spanish but these sentences rarely get translated, either because of their difficulty or because people prefer to translate from other languages. The same happens with the sentences I've been adding for years whenever I came up with a word that should be represented in Tatoeba, many are not translated.

someone even added whole sentences there by mistake, so I agree that being able to correct or delete them would be useful.

@arh muchas gracias por darle voz a tantas de mis frases y por tu increíble trabajo en Tatoeba :)

same here :) I know a bit of javascript and html and very basic php but that's it, but it sounds fun so I'd like to at least try :)

I have problems adding sentences and links, although no problem to add comments...

Shishir Shishir 12. september 2021 12. september 2021 kl. 08:43:39 UTC link Tengill

well that's the thing, the sentences you added were orginally in Wikiverse, and from there they were added here, so they have that CC BY SA 3 licence. If it was the other way and they were originally in Tatoeba there would be no problem.

Shishir Shishir 12. september 2021 12. september 2021 kl. 08:34:21 UTC link Tengill

I think it's a bit more complicated than that because Tatoeba sentences are not only used in Tatoeba and then in Wikiverse, but in lots of other projects that will just make a general attribution to Tatoeba and that's it... If some sentences in Tatoeba are copyrighted under the CC BY SA 3 but in Tatoeba they appear as CC BY 2 and in other websites they're also treated as CC BY 2 where Tatoeba is the original author I don't know how well we'll comply with Wikiverse's copyright.

Since we are not allowed to add content from Wikipedia because of this, I wonder if and why texts from Wikiverse would be any different. But as I said I'm no expert, I would just like this to be cleared up before these sentences get lots of translations.

Shishir Shishir 12. september 2021 12. september 2021 kl. 08:18:49 UTC link Tengill

I don't know if this is possible because of the copyright licences: Wikiversity has a CC BY-SA 3.0 licence, while Tatoeba has CC BY 2.0 or CC0 licence. Maybe someone who knows more than I do about this kind of stuff could tell us.
