The English translation is wrong! "too much" is not implied here. The correct English translation should be
I spent Saturday afternoon watching TV.
I'd argue that it's not all that wrong. If someone spends an afternoon watching the telly, most people would take it to mean that it was too much.
Maybe 「すごしてしまった」 would work to give an explicit 'too much' nuance though.
見すぎました would give that nuance of "too much", SUGIRU means "spend time". I think these two words were confused here.
Sorry, but what most people would think about spending afternoons watching TV is irrelevant. There is a huge difference between just watching TV and watching entirely too much TV.
