Does 当社比 equivalent to IMO/IMHO to any extent?

tommy_san tommy_san February 27, 2013 February 27, 2013 at 3:00:15 PM UTC link Permalink

This is a phrase to say jokingly that it's not based on any objective statistics or something, it's only a personal opinion. I personally don't use it, but I sometimes see (yes, see, rather than hear) it.

Here's an example of "当社比" in its original meaning.

Maybe "YMMV" would fit better than IMO/IMHO.

I agree with Jim.

I see. Thanks, Jim, thanks, Tommy! :-)

Is this count as an annotation?

JimBreen JimBreen September 27, 2021 September 27, 2021 at 3:29:26 AM UTC link Permalink

Dunno. It's being used as an example sentence for the second sense of 当社比.

This is how it would be written, isn't it?

What's in (...) is not annotating the sentence about language use.

TRANG's rule about annotation, I think, is that she doesn't want annotation within sentences like the examples given on the rules page.

Understood. It's not an annotation in that sense.

DJ_Saidez DJ_Saidez April 21, 2022 April 21, 2022 at 2:17:47 AM UTC link Permalink

So annotations in parenthesis are fine as long as it's not some sort of reference or about language usage?
I thought they were all disallowed

JimBreen JimBreen April 21, 2022 April 21, 2022 at 6:05:31 AM UTC link Permalink

I think that sort of thing is OK when it's part of the sentence in a broad sense.

CK CK April 21, 2022 April 21, 2022 at 8:00:11 AM UTC link Permalink

Like my previous comment said, this is not an annotation but part of the sentence. I do not understand the confusion.

DJ_Saidez, my understanding is that something is an annotation if it breaks the fourth wall - it's not something the speaker utters, but it's something the "narrator" adds to explain the phrase to the public.

For example, if I start explaining the term "breaking the fourth wall" right after writing the sentence above, that would be an annotation.

If it's something the speaker actually utters as part of the phrase, it's not an annotation (but you may have a different opinion on that).

Please note that "but you may have a different opinion on that" is not an annotation; that is something I would actually say talking to you.

I had sided on the side of “parenthesis in sentence bad” even though I use them myself outside of Tatoeba, so I’m just confused on what is good and bad usage of them
