Why "last" ten words? Is that supposed to mean something like "most recently added"? @Pfirsichbaeumchen, I know that "letzten" translates directly into "late". Is there some other meaning that is relevant here?

No, it means exactly what you assume: the latest/most recent ten Words of the Year. The German sentence needs repairing.
