I think it makes more sense with a single speaker. A second speaker wouldn't say 「私は」 but instead reply with something like 「いや、思いません」
This is the first speaker 'butting in' and speaking his/her opinion before giving the other side a chance to answer.
On the second hand, it doesn't quite match the French. I'd think the butt-in version would be "Moi, je ne crois pas." (My French is rusted beyond repair though.)
