I think either is fine, and if anything 'in the train' is more logical in this case.
I feel that if the umbrella had been handen in as luggage but forgotten to be picked up, it would be "in the train". Had the person taken the umbrella with him on the train, one refers to it being left where he was, which is "on the train."
