If the English was changed to "what he owed us" the semantic problem would be fixed, I believe. So would the German then be "schuldete" ?

and I translated it because I think both the English and the German sentences are oookay as they are right now. I don't think speakers would perceive them as wrong if uttered in everyday conversation. just in written form, they feel a bit weird. if CK changes his, I will change mind (CK, if you do it, please just quickly drop a comment on my German sentence).
