In another post - https://tatoeba.org/de/wall/sho...#message_41768 - I offered to @LeviHighway to publish some small programs I'm using to extract greek sentences and roughly sort them by difficulty, based on word counts.

Meanwhile they are online. You can find them at https://github.com/kumakyoo42/tatoeba_tools

The sorting algorithm is mainly designed for languages with spaces between the words. I added support for counting symbols instead of words. With this, I hope at least, sentences of other languages might also be sorted roughly by difficulty. On a whim I checked this with Japanese sentences. At first glance it looks like it might work. The easiest one was "はい" (yes). But I don't know enough about Japanese language to judge the more complicated sentences.

I suggest that [Vocabulary Requests] prioritize displaying vocabulary items with more sentences, and show items with fewer sentences later.

For example, there might be 5 sentences containing "學生" and 0 sentences containing "大學生". Since the [Existing Vocabulary Requests] prioritizes items with fewer sentences, most people will add sentences for "大學生" first. By the time sentences containing "大學生" reach 10, sentences containing "學生" reach 15 — but most of those "學生" sentences actually contain "大學生". This is harmful to the lexical richness of the corpus.

As a result of kumakyoo's recent comment about the many Greek sentences that need correction, I've been taking a look at the ones tagged "@change". I see that a user who is no longer active marked a large number of sentences "@change" but never left comments explaining the changes that should be made.

If you mark a sentence "@change", please also leave a comment explaining how it should be changed unless it's obvious even to someone who doesn't speak the language (especially important if the language isn't spoken by any administrators or corpus maintainers). And in general, if you embark on a task that involves a large amount of effort on your part but also some action on someone else's, give some thought to how to make sure that others can pick up where you left off.

Finally, a specific request: If you speak Greek, please consider going through the sentences that are tagged "@change" and adding comments to explain the necessary changes where they aren't already spelled out. Here's a list of Greek sentences marked "@change":

Note the discussion on sentence #2429711.

Would you also be interested in correcting Mandarin sentences? I can provide the necessary information for those. Before that, I’d like to clarify something: would you only correct obvious issues such as punctuation, or would you also make changes involving grammar mistakes, typos, or semantic errors that you may not be familiar with?

The situation for Mandarin is quite different from the one for Greek:

- Mandarin has a corpus maintainer (who has been active within the past month). Greek doesn't.
- The comments on the Greek sentences are mostly in English, which I speak, while the ones on the Chinese sentences are not.
- The comments on the Greek sentences mostly indicate straightforward problems with capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Many of the comments on the Mandarin sentences are about naturalness. Not only am I not qualified to deal with such questions, but there can be reasonable disagreement between members on the subject (and on the related subject of whether it's worthwhile to change sentences that are already correct).
- There are about 300 sentences tagged "@change" in Greek. There are about 800 in Mandarin, more than twice as many.
- I know the Greek alphabet, which makes it easier for me to understand the proposed changes. I don't know the Mandarin writing system.

I suggest communicating with the Mandarin corpus maintainer first. If you're dissatisfied with the result, you can contact the Tatoeba team or me privately.

Setting aside the issue of naturalness, would you be willing to help fix the punctuation? The Mandarin corpus maintainer hardly ever replies. Even though she’s been active lately, I doubt she’s willing to keep maintaining it long-term.

Let's discuss this offline.

kumakyoo kumakyoo 9 gün önce 23 Mart 2026 08:51:42 UTC flag Report link Kalıcı bağlantı

I meanwhile went through all greek sentences tagged with @change and tried to find out what's wrong. Now there is either

a) a clear comment what is to be changed (either from me or some other person)
b) a "@needs native check" tag (in cases I couldn't find the problem)
c) the sentence is listed in https://tatoeba.org/de/sentence...s/show/174630. This means, the @change can be removed, because the sentence has already been fixed or there isn't anything wrong with it (because we decided that language names can be either upper or lower case and Συγγνώμη could be written with either one or two gammas, or I found this sentence in a reliabale source, like a dictionary book).

🍎 Bilingual TTS Player

https://www.manythings.org/bilingual/tts/

This project includes the 40 languages that have 4,000 or more selected sentence pairs with English.

► The quality of the TTS voices will depend on what you have installed on your device.

► For some of the languages, TTS may not be available, and you will only hear the English TTS.

► I think this may not work in the Edge browser, but I'm not sure.

► Using Google Chrome, should also display the Google online voices as options.

🍎 Thanks to everyone who watched the videos that I put links to on the Wall last week, and sent me feedback.

► As before, please send feedback to me via https://tatoeba.org/en/private_messages/write/CK instead of cluttering this public wall.

Let me know of any problems, or send suggestions for improvements.
