> I am currently translating english sentences to sicilian arabic dialect (and its varieties), I am assigning them the 'ara' macrofamily language since it already contains many sentences in various other arabic dialects.

I don't think it's a good idea. Most Arabic dialects have different flags on Tatoeba.
For example, Egyptian Arabic - https://tatoeba.org/eng/sentenc...ne/indifferent
Iraqi Arabic - https://tatoeba.org/eng/sentenc...ne/indifferent
Levantine Arabic - https://tatoeba.org/eng/sentenc...ne/indifferent

You can also request a new flag for the Sicilian Arabic. The 'ara' flag is usually used for the Classical Arabic.

> If one day you guys want to transfer the 'ara' sentences to their respective language, please avoid touching my sentences.
Then why do you add your sentences to Tatoeba? It's all about translations.

Well, this way I think it wouldn't do any harm except that it might be confusing for the newbies. Now most "Arabic" sentences are indeed MSA sentences. But I'm not sure what the benefits would be. The varieties of Arabic are different enough to qualify as separate languages, unlike what happens with the varieties of Spanish.

from the Tatoeba FAQ:
Why are some sentences in red?
Red sentences are not approved. They raise copyright issues or are otherwise problematic.
You should not translate them.

https://en.wiki.tatoeba.org/articles/show/faq

They could also be added by spamers or people who claim to speak too many languages.

I'm not well aware of the situation with Berber languages but as a learner of Modern Standar Arabic I think it's not a good solution. The dialects are quite different, they have different sentence structures, totally different grammar and a bit different pronunciation for letters and words. They may share the same vocabulary, but you may find the same words used to indicate slightly different meanings as well as different words for something. For example, if I'm looking for Arabic translations for "tomorrow" I don't want to get "بكرة" instead of "غداً".

> This makes me think that the amount of trust I’d put in a sentence has more to do with the number and quality of proofreads than the nativeness of the author.

It is certainly reasonable, however I think the sentences created by non-native speakers should be checked first. It's not only because they tend to make more mistakes or create more sentences that sound awkward ( as well said in #1907470 )
It's also because non-native sentences that have an OK tag or that are marked as "OK" (i.e. proofread) look more solid and confident so they become more useful.

It would be useful for our corpus maintainers. We usually check the newest sentences but the old contributions usually remain unchecked. Moreover, sometimes it's hard to find 1-2 non-native sentences among the latest contributions.

Thank you.

* SUGGESTION *

It would be great if we could search all the sentences contributed by non-native speakers for a given language. I believe it's not that difficult to implement.

@OsoHombre @gillux
As a learner of Arabic, I would like the search engine to distinguish at least the shadda diacritics ّ, because the meaning is quite different. خرج would mean to leave and خرّج to make someone go out. The best solution to this problem would be to make the search engine adjustable, so that anyone could decide if he wants to distinguish it or no.

Yes, I have also seen such words as "بنك", "بيتزا", "تاكسي". Maybe they are used more in such countries as Lebanon. As to the dictionary, unfortunately there is only one big Arabic-Russian dictionary that was created in 80s. I also use almaany dictionary sometimes. Thank you for your help.

Do you use كِلُوبٌ? BTW, I think my dictionary is wrong this time, it says نَدِىٌّ https://i.imgur.com/33cSjwT.png

Anybody knows what's the best way to contact Trang? She doesn't reply my PM's.

What do you mean? Horus could merge two bad sentences as well. It doesn't guarantee anything. Besides, I think each good sentence should have this tag, it's never bad to have a double check. O bom nunca é de mais.

For now there is no easy way to do it. You can check them one by one using this page https://tatoeba.org/eng/users/for_language/por
Five stars mean it's a native speaker.

There is no such option, but you can set "Owner" who is Portuguese or Brazilian according to his profile.

I think most users have it. Tags also can help sometimes.
