Recently I received some requests to change quotation marks into "German" quotation marks. „“ I think such things should be done automatically and not on a sentence-by-sentence basis.

Ah I see. Maybe it would have been cool to warn users about this, similar to the way Twitter or Facebook mention new functionalities with a popup. I suppose that like me, many users will not recognize they post new sentences in Afrikaans. We might run into big problems with our sentence database if users are unaware of this.

It seems all my new postings get posted in Afrikaans, although they are German.

There are two issues at stake here:
1) People are creating many variations of the same sentence. This is especially true for simple sentences.
2) Variations naturally evolve by translation, if one word in one language can be translated differently into another language. If two translations are created, then these two are again translated into many other languages, etc.

The question remains whether all of these variants are helpful / relevant and if not, how we could avoid these.

Personally, when encountering sentence variants in Japanese which I translate into German, I either link them to the same sentence in German if they mean exactly the same, or I just translate one and then go on to other, more interesting sentences.

In the case of languages where the names are changed according to case, etc., a simple replace method will not work anymore, as the computer would in theory need to know the case the name is in. If a computer can then in practice change a concrete name into a special form is still another issue, and this would have to be implemented in all languages. I therefore doubt this can be realized.

xtofu80 xtofu80 4 июнь, 2011 ел 4 июнь, 2011 ел, 8:02:27 UTC link Даими сылтама

From a computer science point of view, replacing names with generic tags certainly makes sense.
What I am worried about: are there languages which inflect names, for example changing a names ending if it is in the accusative?
This would complicate matters of course.

Is it necessary that all other languages match the English sentence?
Sacredceltic is often adding comments to my German sentences if they do not exactly match the English sentences word-by-word, although I usually translate from the Japanese, so if there is a little mismatch, then this is also reflected in the Japanese sentence.
Sacredceltic's opinion seems to be that ALL languages have to match the English one word-by-word.
Is this an official tatoeba policy?

Currently Tatoeba is awfully slow. Is this due to the duplication removal operation, or is there another issue?

xtofu80 xtofu80 19 февраль, 2011 ел 19 февраль, 2011 ел, 22:27:36 UTC link Даими сылтама

I found the underlying issue:
When I search:
"重な" -"貴重" Language: Any
I get 0 results!
When I search:
"重な" -"貴重" Language: Japanese
I get 19 results!

I thought that setting the language to Any would also find the Japanese sentences!

xtofu80 xtofu80 19 февраль, 2011 ел 19 февраль, 2011 ел, 19:25:28 UTC link Даими сылтама

Yeah, but why can't I do it in the tatoeba search?
It used to work.

xtofu80 xtofu80 17 февраль, 2011 ел 17 февраль, 2011 ел, 22:30:38 UTC link Даими сылтама

I have a question about restricting one's search.
I want to search for the word "重なる". In order to find all verb forms, I decided to search for "重な", however this finds a lot of entries with "貴重な". So I wanted to remove all these entries from my search, entering:"重な" -"貴重"
However, this led to no search results, although there are entries.
Can someone tell me the correct syntax? I know that it used to work like this.

All right, if it's fixed in the next version anyway, then go ahead. I just thought it is nonsense to find and remove duplicates manually, as some members did.

xtofu80 xtofu80 26 гыйнвар, 2011 ел 26 гыйнвар, 2011 ел, 16:03:04 UTC link Даими сылтама

For what reason can't duplicates be removed automatically by a script?

xtofu80 xtofu80 23 гыйнвар, 2011 ел 23 гыйнвар, 2011 ел, 8:56:27 UTC link Даими сылтама

I am a trusted user, but I cannot remove "@needs native check" tags when I correct sentences for my mother tongue German. I can add the "OK" tag, but how do I remove tags?

xtofu80 xtofu80 4 гыйнвар, 2011 ел 4 гыйнвар, 2011 ел, 14:59:01 UTC link Даими сылтама

Can I see the status of a user, whether he/she is able to link/unlink sentences? If I want to ask a user to link a sentence he/she owns, this only makes sense if the user has the corresponding user rights.

What use is the tag "です。"? You can easily search for all sentence containing that phrase using the simple search.
