"Sie hatte Französich für wenige Jahre studiert" is a very poor attempt at translating "She has been studying French for a few years". Problems:

* According to the English sentence, she is still studying. According to the German sentence, she stopped long ago.
* The English sentence is ambivalent about whether "a few years" is a long or short period in this context. The German sentence with its unidiomatic "für wenige Jahre" paints it unequivocally as a short period.
* Typo: "Französich" should be "Französisch"

@arcticmonkey: Genau so (je ein Satz mit "lernt" und "studiert") habe ich mir das vorgestellt, aber vielleicht nicht klar genug erklärt.
