لا مشكلة في "ذهب"، أليس كذلك؟

I thought that سفر could be better, because you cannot "go" to China (I somehow feel that ذهب has to do with walking), but if you believe that ذهب is good enough, then fine with me.

I agree with samer...seems fine to me as well

I believe that قد ذهب could maybe be appropriate in cases of past perfect, i.e., "he had gone", if you are about to mention another action which took place afterwards.

it works as a translation for the past perfect, yes...but it's "inaccurate" (I mean that's not what the arabic really says)
قد ذهب
directly translates to:
(he) did go
قد doesn't modify the tense of the verb in any way, it simply emphasizes that it did in fact happen.

one more note(not directed towards anyone in particular):
قد ذهب أبي إلى الصين sounds really unnatural...if you're gonna use it, please have a good reason to do so, like in this sentence: http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/372814
otherwise use لقد

@saeb: thanks. So, قد and لقد function as sort of emphatic, namely, "indeed"? It's not what we learned at the university, but, as always, I learn from you. Maybe today لقد or قد don't have any particular function besides "indeed".
