@NNC: This doesn't sound quite natural to me. Comparing it to the Japanese, perhaps “She finally managed to get a hold of/contact her old friend” would be more fitting?

maybe it needs a translation check tag.
My wife (Japanese) says that 連絡を取る implies difficulty That isn't implied in 連絡する.
I suggest
"At last, she was able to contact her old friend."
To me "at last *comma*" seems to imply there was an extended earlier effort.
