זה תרגומי מאוד.
אני, אישית, מאוד מסתייג מהנוסחה "זה היה... ש...", כי שומעים כאן את האנגלית.
אם אתה רוצה להדגיש את הזמן, אולי:
אתמול קנה מייק את המחבט.
אין לי רעיון אחר להדגשה.

את המחבט קנה מייק אתמול יכול להדגיש את "המחבט" קנה מייק אתמול או לחילופין את המחבט קנה מייק "אתמול". בגלל זה התרגום דו משמעי. היות שהמבנה גם באנגלית נשמע מלאכותי, בור שהכותב היה מעוניין להדגיש שהקניה נעשת אתמול ולא ביום אחר.
