I suppose that just because someone else is calling the mother in question, doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't Bob's mother as well. I don't really like 'a mother' though.
Without context it's difficult to pin it down exactly, but I would think something along the following lines. With 'your' being the general term (like "one's") in this case. Perhaps he's responding to a general practise of people working abroad / away from home?
