Pour moi, être battu se suffit à lui-même, ou alors nécessite « à l'aide de » pour préciser le moyen, au lieu de « avec »

=> Il a été battu par des voyous.
=> Il a été battu par des voyous à l'aide d'une barre de fer.

À partir du moment où je précise le moyen par « avec », je n'utilise plus « battu » mais « frappé », qui, lui, s'utilise le plus souvent en précisant le moyen.

=> il a été frappé avec un marteau par des voyous

Bien sûr, comme à ton habitude, tu trouveras des exemples contraires...
