An Arabic loan? Nice.

Not exactly. «Calamus» can be found in many dictionaries with the following meaning:
calamus ~ī, m. [Gk. κάλαμος]
2 A reed pen, pen (i.e. for writing with ink on paper; opp. to «stilus», a metal instrument for writing on waxed tablets).
OXFORD LATIN DICTIONARY
But yes, «قلم» and «κάλαμος» sound very alike...

Huh, interesting.
...and looking it up, turns out قلم was borrowed from Greek, as well. The more you know.

Aha! It's possible.
