Hi ;-)
Could we translate the verb "içti" as "ate", or only as "drank"? I rendered it in Hebrew as "drank", as this is how I know this Turkish verb.

Ha ha ha .....
I swear the moment I translated this sentence, I knew you would question my verb choice in Turkish. :) So I am prepared.
The thing is that regardless of the form of the poison, liquid or solid, it is very common to say "zehir içmek". That is to say you don't eat it. And I don't find it quite right to interpret "içmek" as drinking (like it is in liquid form) in this sense. It may not have anthing to do with a fluid, yet içmek has strong connotation with poison.
To conclude, in my humble opinion any translation from Turkish should consider rendering an act of eating, as well as drinking where possible.

I'm not sure I understood your reply, but I was prepared for it as well ;-)
That is to say, I thought that this is the verb you would use with "poison" (i.e., zehir), although you wouldn't necessarily render it as "eat" in other languages.
So, my question is whether I could render it "eat" in the current context, and would it conform to the spirit of the Turkish verb in this respect.

You definitely could, and it definitely would.

sağol :)

I had a typo in my previous comment above:
although you wouldn't necessarily render it as "eat" in other languages => although you wouldn't necessarily render it as "drink" in other languages
I guess you've noticed my typo.
Anyhow, thanks for your reply, I changed my Hebrew variants accordingly.

To be honest, I didn't notice it. Seems like I see things as I predict them to be. :)

It's only human ;-)

@freefighter
Could you call this: "Beklenti etkisi" ? ☺

Absolutely! People tend to interpret his/her perceptions primarily within the framework of expectations. S/he can only consider alternative explanations when expected scenario fails to satisfy the new conditions.
"Beklenti etkisi" fits. :)

Fine! ☺
