√16 = -4 ? :-)

4 and −4 are square roots of 16 because 42 = (−4)2 = 16.

√16 means the *positive* square root of 16. There also exists the negative square root, i.e. -√16.

^^ I completely forgot that square root of a number "a" is a number "b" for which the following is true: b^2 = a :-)
By the way, if 平方根 is "square root", is there any word for "principal (or arithmetic) square root" that has only non-negative result?
