When there is an opposition between two sentences, we should prefer "but" to connect them. The masters like you says so.Take care.
I don't know Japanese. But as far as I can see, there isn't an "and" between two sentences, there is a comma. In fact neither yours nor mine matches the Japanese one. But nothing to do with it for me. Take care:)
