
Please add a period. I think a semicolon is also better between two main clauses.
It matters not how a man dies, but how he lives. The act of dying is not of importance; it lasts so short a time.

I left the punctuation the way that Johnson wrote it (including the final period), though I agree that if the sentence were to be written now, a semicolon would be better.
